History & Status of the Fishery
Phoebe Lake is in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) approximately 20 miles northwest of Tofte, MN. The lake is on a heavily traveled canoe route and has nine maintained campsites.
The fish sampled in DNR nets in 1998 were walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and white sucker.
Walleye were sampled in below average numbers compared to other lakes of this type. The fish ranged from 10.7 inches to 17.9 inches with approximately 50% of the fish being between 16.0 inches and 17.9 inches.
Northern pike numbers are about average for this type of lake with an average size that is above average. Northern pike range from 14.3 inches to 31.3 inches (7.5 pounds) and averaged just over 3 pounds each.
The smallmouth bass catch in the 1998 survey is considered normal both in numbers and size. The bass that were collected ranged from 7.8 inches to 13.0 inches and averaged 11.7 inches.
