History & Status of the Fishery
Discussion: Cut Lake is located 12 miles west and 1.5 miles north of Pine River in west-central Cass County. The lake is 32 acres, has 1.1 miles of shoreline, and a maximum depth of 40 feet. Two inlets enter the lake form the drainage of swamps. One inlet enters the lake on the northwest shore and the other on the northeast shore. An artificial outlet is located on the east shore. This results from a cut (hence, the name of the lake) made in the sand ridge on the east shore during logging operations near the turn of the century. In effect, this changed the lake from the Crow Wing River watershed to the Pine River watershed. This cut was partially filled later and the water level of the lake reached its normal high and was stable for several years. The unusual high water in the spring of 1966 overflowed this partial cut and washed out the earth fill, dropping the water level about seven feet. This cut should be refilled and stablized with a culvert or other structure so that future high water will not again drastically drop the water level. A secchi reading of 14.5 feet was recorded indicating the small amount of suspended material in the suspension; this reading allows light penetration to a farily great depth for plant growth. The lake has soft water with a total alkalinity of 20 ppm. Three species of fish were found in the test netting. They were the northern pike, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed. A large population of pumpkinseeds were found, but individual size was small indicating a stunted population of pumpkinseeds. The spawning area for northern pike was fair, but the centrarchids spawning areas were good.
