History & Status of the Fishery
Long Lake (DOW# 11-0142; Lake Class 25) is a 1007-acre lake with 15.96 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 115 feet located near Longville, MN. A DNR owned public access is located on the northwest shore. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Long Lake is in Lake Class 25; lakes in this class are deep, clear, and irregularly shaped lakes. Other area lakes in this class include Blackwater, Howard, Inguadona and Girl. The lake is primarily managed for Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie and Bluegill. Secondarily for Northern Pike, Tullibee (Cisco) and Yellow Perch.
Long Lake is a good multi-species lake with the potential to produce trophy size fish. No Rainbow Trout were sampled in the 2021 survey. Anglers who catch Rainbow Trout in this lake are encouraged to contact the Walker Fisheries office to report their catch. Largemouth Bass were abundant with fish from 5 to 16 inches sampled; management goals are based on spring electrofishing which was not conducted in 2021. Black Crappie were caught at moderate levels with fish from 5 to 12 inches sampled. Goals for the Black Crappie population are based on spring trap netting which was not conducted in 2021. Bluegill were caught at low levels with fish from 3 to 9 inches sampled. The Bluegill catch did not meet the management goals. Northern Pike were caught at moderate levels with fish from 9 to 34 inches sampled. Northern Pike were just over the management goal for abundance in this survey. Tullibee (Cisco) were caught at moderate levels with fish ranging from 13 to 16 inches. The Tullibee (Cisco) catch met the management goal. Few Yellow Perch were sampled and the catch was below the management goal; perch ranged from 6 to 10 inches in length. Few Walleye were also sampled and lengths ranged from 12 to 25 inches.
Other fish species that anglers can expect to encounter include Brown Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Yellow Bullhead, Pumpkinseed and Rock Bass.
People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. Currently, no aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Long Lake. AIS are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resource office. Additional information on all of these topics can be found on the DNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us) or by contacting the Walker Area Fisheries office.
