History & Status of the Fishery
Wasserman is a 170-acre lake located in Carver County near the city of Victoria. There is a DNR-owned public access on the north side of the lake that has a concrete ramp with a dock and limited parking. Wasserman is managed for Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Bluegill. A Standard Survey was conducted 2020 to assess the gamefish populations.
Most noticeable in 2020 was the very high abundance of Black Crappie. The vast majority of the fish were between 7.5 and 9.5 inches. There is good opportunity for crappie harvest on this lake both now and during the next few years as the fish grow. Bluegill were also present in high numbers, and their sizes were good as well; 32% of the sampled fish exceeded 7 inches. The largest Bluegill measured was 8.5 inches.
Northern Pike tend to be modestly sized and abundant in Wasserman, however a few larger fish were present in the 2020 survey. Half of the sampled fish were smaller than 22 inches, so this could be a good lake for the harvest-oriented angler. While only 17% of the fish exceeded 26 inches, the largest fish measured was 34.5 inches. With a few larger fish present, and many smaller ones available, Wasserman offers a good opportunity for Northern Pike harvest, with the potential for some larger fish.
Although standard bass sampling was not conducted in 2020, the lake is known for its strong Largemouth Bass population. During the last survey, in 2016, the largest bass sampled was 20.5 inches and 27% of the catch exceeded 15 inches. In 2020, bass incidentally caught in the gill nets in trap nets indicated that the population continues to support large fish. The largest Largemouth Bass encountered in 2020 was 19.7 inches.
Overall, Wasserman supports strong populations of Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and panfish. Other species sampled in low abundance were Black Bullhead, Bowfin (dogfish), Brown Bullhead, Golden Shiner, Yellow Bullhead, Yellow Perch, and Pumpkinseed.
