What aquatic invasive species are found in Ballantyne Lake?
Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.
History & Status of the Fishery
A targeted survey of the fish community was conducted on July 8, 2019 by Fisheries Lake IBI program staff. Sampling included trap netting and nearshore sampling (seining and backpack electrofishing). Nine trap net locations were sampled along the shoreline in multiple habitats. Nearshore sampling stations were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine. Backpack electrofishing was completed at all 10 stations. A 50-foot seine was used to sample nine stations and a 15-foot seine was used at one station. The nearshore sampling captured 17 native fish species including two species (Banded Killifish and Iowa Darter) intolerant of habitat disturbance and three species (Black Bullhead, Common Carp, and Fathead Minnow) that are tolerant of disturbance. The most abundant species by biomass in the trap nets were Black Bullhead, Bluegill, and Common Carp.
Data from this nearshore survey and trap net survey is combined with data from a standard gill netting survey to calculate a Fish-based Index of Biological Integrity (FIBI) score that describes the overall health of the lake. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. The FIBI score for Ballantyne Lake based on this survey is very near the impairment threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes.
Data from this survey will contribute biological information about the health of the fish community to the Minnesota River - Mankato Watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency.
