History & Status of the Fishery

Big Lake is a 3,596 acre lake with a native Muskellunge population that has been supplemented by fingerling stocking for decades. A targeted assessment for muskies using large-frame trap nets was conducted in 2023 as part of a two-phased evaluation. Electrofishing is planned for spring 2024 to derive a population estimate from the proportion of recaptures.

In May 2023, trap netting was conducted to capture adult muskies during the spring spawning season. This resulted in capture and release of 39 adult Muskellunge. Sizes ranged from over 28 to 51 inches and averaged just short of 44 inches in length. Fin clips were taken for ageing purposes; the oldest fish found was 19, though the majority were between 12 and 14 years old.

Very good largemouth bass fishing. Lots of smallish pike and some bigger fish available. Saw a few small muskies in the 24-36" range during a week long vacation with the family. Limited time to Muskie fish. Very good structure the lake link map doesn't show. Walleye were a little scarce for me but I'm not much of a walleye fisherman. Did catch some though in the 16-24" range. Nice lake
