Beautiful night out!   I couldn't resist heading to one of my favorite ponds to fish! The lakes have been busy lately so I have been giving the kayak a little more attention than the boat. The road to that leads to St Joe Lake is under construction and limited to through traffic only. This gave me the pond all to myself!

I started the night with larger sized swim baits and jigs to see if I can tempt any northern pike, but as I learned quickly...the key was to down size to more smaller bait fish profiles. The water is clear as always, so a natural presentation was the ticket. If you can get past all the crappies, the pike and large mouth bass are definitely there! I switched back to mono line on my secondary rod and missed a few strikes. But I did manage to catch a pike and 2 large mouth bass (1 off camera). Another fun night on the waters of Minnesota.

Since the boat ramps have been busy lately, I decided to take the kayak out to one of my favorite fishing ponds, Lake Saint Joe aka "Lil Jo" in Chanhassen MN of Carver County. Getting on the pond is a little tricky, but if you don't mind getting wet, it's a breeze.

Going through my selection of pan fish lures , I finally found something the crappies and blue gills wanted. I found that my REBEL pan fish crank baits were the ticket! The water is very clear in this reservoir so sticking to a natural presentation was best suited. As always the blue gills were feisty and fun to catch, but the crappies lacked any girth to them. From my experience fishing here over the years, the crappies have been very thin. While going through my selection of pan fish lures, I was also able to catch a small Northern Pike.

First time ice fishing on Lake Lil Joe this season! I drilled into ice that was 7.5 inches thick. I set up my portable on top 45FOW around the main hole. The flasher immediately showed schools of fish stacked between 30-15 feet. The fishing however, was nothing to write home about. The crappies were very lethargic. They would come up to my jig and give me a very light tap. Some would get away and some would be pulled up to reveal their 5-6 inch figure!   . The water was very stained and the snow on top of ice gave the fish very poor visibility to lures. I used minnow heads and pan fish plastics on very bright jigs. Lets say this lake is not one of the many I will be visiting again this season.

This report is from Saturday morning. Little Joe was always a hidden gem for me, however the hot and bright sunny morning made it tough to catch the hungry pike and bass found in this pond. The weeds and lily pads ares still coming in, so the boat landing is somewhat clear enough to wade through.

I caught many pan fish during this outing, but the pike and bass were allusive. I got cut off 2 times from pike and had one spit my hook right after I picked him up! Good times regardless.

It's been over a year since I have open water fished this pond. Tough pond to get on! No real boat ramp or dock access. Once I was able to make it through the muck and weeds, the fishing was great! The bass and pike seem to be aggressive as always!

First time on the lake this winter. A lot different from last year. The fish are very fussy biters. I had to work them for a while. No Gills were found and Crappies were 9-10".

This may be one of my last fishing reports for the SW Metro lakes! Beautiful weather over the weekend allows for being able to stay portable. And being portable paid off for me! Hitting limits for crappie today and yesterday. Fishing in 30 fow, the crappie were suspended around 19-17 fow. Some are shooting up from 22 fow with aggressive hits. Using Lindy Rattl'n Flyer Spoons and Northland Tackle Live Forage jigs tipped with minnow heads.

Stay tuned for future reports of early open water fishing for pan fish. Smile

Fussy biters today! Dead sticking with minnow heads on jigs, was the best technique. I was sitting on 34 fow and fish are hitting at 25 fow.

Super cold out this morning! I was out from 9 to noon, fishing in 28 fow (6 inches of ice), catching crappie and nice sized Gills in 24-25 fow. They were hitting lures without being tipped with bait! But as the morning wore off, I had to tip some jigs with minnow heads to get them to bite. Had a medium sized sucker on a tip up, but no takers. I fish this pond in the open water season and it is very promising. So I hope I can catch that monster pike soon!

13 inches of ice on top of 22 fow where I was fishing at. Had some aggressive hits from a few pikes, but couldn't get them hooked. Nibbles from panfish a few feet off the floor, but no takers.
