The evening walleye bite seems to be in full swing. We trolled #5 and #7 shads in 8' to 11' of water for our best results. Also, got some really nice ones pitching jig & shiners and jig & redtails into the outside weedlines during the day. Good luck out there!

Was on Otter Tail July 13-20. Caught walleyes the first two days then the heat and wind rolled in and had to work harder to find biters the rest of the week. Plugs and then crawlers ruled but some were caught on leeches. The pic was of a floater sturgeon the girls found.

A very good Labor Day weekend on the water in western Minnesota! The hi-lite of the weekend was the walleye bite on Ottertail Lake. Lots of walleyes came aboard today, a bunch of little fish, but with a good amount of “eaters” and bigger fish mixed in as well. Our presentation consisted of 2-ounce Slick-Stick bottom bouncers and spinners tipped with nightcrawlers. We targeted main lake humps in water depths from 22-30 feet Earlier in the weekend, partners and I spent time bassin’ on several different lakes in the Alexandria and Fergus Falls areas with very good results. A variety of presentations caught fish including LIVETARGET crawfish crankbaits, jig-worms tipped with Impulse Ribbon Worms, and Jungle Jigs. We also had one trip where we experienced very good action throwing LIVETARGET frogs across shallow slop. Fall is a great time for fishing and it appears like the good fall bite has already started! After a very good start, a severe cold front Friday night made western Minnesota fishing a bit more difficult over the weekend. A Thursday evening fishing trip and another early Friday morning resulted in two very good bass bites. Largemouth were targeted fishing Impulse Dip-Stick Worms on jigheads for deeper fish and on weightless wacky hooks for shallower fish. Smallmouth bass were also caught on tubes and drop-shot rigs. Today (Sunday), I hit the water searching for walleyes. We did get a few fish, though the bite was much slower than last weekend. Spinners and nightcrawlers accounted for our fish. Interestingly, water temperatures today were down in the mid-70 degree range after low-80 degree temperatures just a few days earlier. Tonight, it was back after bass. Did manage a few largemouth and some smallmouth again. The best bass action was for the smallies as they hit drop-shot rigs tipped with Impulse Riggin’ Leeches fished on rock humps in 13-16 feet of water. It has been another good weekn on the water in western Minnesota! The hi-lite of the weekend was a Sunday morning guide trip on a small local lake chasing walleyes. Though these are supposedly the “dog days of summer” when the walleye bite is tough, someone forgot to tell the fish! We found active fish on the tips of a point where the water drops from 6- 10-feet deep in this shallow lake. Our presentation was a Slick-Stick bottom bouncer and spinner tipped with a nightcrawler. Moving 1.5 mph we were able to catch several fish in the 16-22 inch size range. Also mixed in with the walleyes were several perch in the 9- to 11-inch size range. Earlier in the weekend, I fished the Le Homme Dieu Chain and Lake Ida in the Alexandria area for bass. The bite here was very good as well. Fishing the deep weedline, partners and I had good success both jig-worm fishing and casting crankbaits.

Our jig-worm set-up consisted of a camo-colored Impulse Dip-Stick Worm fished on a Jungle Jig-Loc head and cast up and into the weeds. Jig-Locs are designed to fish in and through weeds making them ideal for this time of year when weedgrowth is peaking. Our crankbait of choice was the LiveTarget Crawfish. This bait dives 8-10 feet, looks just like a crawfish, and has an action the bass love! I have been throwing these baits on the new Carbon X rods crankbait model in conjunction with a Lew’s Tournament MG baitcasting reel and have been very, very impressed with how far I can cast a bait. Plus, this lightweight combination doesn’t wear me out even after several hours of “chucking and winding!” Until next week, good luck on the water! Fishing here in western Minnesota remains good! Partners and I continue to boat walleyes on spinners and bottom bouncers on several smaller area lakes. However, the real hi-lite of recent fishing trips has been the bass action! I have been catching numbers of fish jig-worming the deep weedline in 10-16 feet, though the biggest fish have been caught pitching Jungle Jigs to heavy weed clumps on flats in 6-12 feet of water. Humminbird’s Side Imaging is a “game changer” when it comes to this fishing as it makes finding heavy weeds on flats very easy, as I simply cruise a flat “looking” to each side of the boat for weeds. Another recommendation I have for anglers in the market for a new reel is to check out Lew’s products. I have been using their casting reels for over a year now and have been very, very impressed. The reels are light, durable, and great for casting baits a long distance. Recently, I have been using some of the new Lew’s spinning reels and my initial impressions are very favorable here as well.

Until next week, good luck on the water!
