Finished our week on Big Sand. Air temps in the 90's most days. Water temps in the mid-70's. Managed to find some decent walleyes....2-4lbs and a few nice smallmouth and largemouth. More huge crappie and rock bass. Northern were all between 20 and 32 in. All legal fish went into the fryer....the rest CPR'd. Vast majority of fish caught on jig/minnow or jig/crawler, close to the bottom in 8-20fow.

First 3 days on Big Sand - some  small smallmouth, tiny walleye, and some large crappie and rockbass. Like fishing in a sauna. Air temps in the upper 90's....mostly clear blue sky....tough conditions to catch decent walleye, but still working on it.

Heading back to Big Sand in early June. Hopefully the eyes will cooperate this year. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Tight lines, all.

Nice walleyes, Mark! Proves that night fishing is the way to go on Big Sand.

Big Sand is a very clear, deep lake, for starters. Apparently most people walleye fish at night, as a result. Our boats didn't have appropriate lights for that, so we fished in the daytime. Very hard to locate fish in this lake. Six of us fished all sorts of structure and only came up with one small walleye, some northern, and a few rock bass. Difficult structures to fish....there were places in the lake where long sand bars brought the water level down to 2 feet deep....roughly 200-400 yards from the shoreline. Some of the sand bars ran for several hundred yards. Very weedy in the shallow areas. Need more time to work this lake and find out where the bigger fish are hiding. We had much better luck finding fish in nearby Potato Lake. Similar odd structure features, but we found more and bigger fish.

I've known a guy who was catching 17 inch crappies in the shallows.  He said you need a telescoping rod since they are skittish.  I've never tried it though.

Fishing Big Sand lake first week of June. Any suggestions for types of baits/lures for crappie and/or smallmouth? I know the water is incredibly clear. Thx.
