Headed South of the pier towards the sand dunes but stopped about just 2/3 of the way there to try a spot being used by a concentration of a dozen other boats fishing 25 to 35 feet of water.  We started catching singles and doubles immediately.  Between the 2 of us we caught and kept 46 Perch all 8 inches or longer.  A few were around 11 and 12 inches.  Most were around 9 to10 inches.  We did not catch a single Gobie.  We fished between 11:00am to 2:30pm.  Most of our fish were actually caught between 11:00am and 1:00pm.  We were using minnows on gold colored hooks.  Cut bait was also working.

Jcc:

I believe you can catch perch fishing off Michigan piers facing Lake Michigan but timing is everything as perch are not in close and in great numbers all the time.

I might add that years ago it was common to see fishermen lining the piers for several days in a row, such as the Grand Haven pier, when the word got out that schools of perch had come in.  I do not believe that kind of pier fishing bonanza has been seen as frequently in the last few years.

I hope your question will eventually be addressed by a current "Pier Fisherman" who might have more up to date advice to offer you than I.

Good luck.

Fished north of the pier, by claybanks.  Started out in 35', no action, slowly headed into shore and began catching in 20'.  Another group headed into shore and quickly signaled that there were big schools laying around the rocky bottom in 12'.  Ended the day with a nice catch of 8 - 12".

Date: 7/12/2018.  Fishing time: 2:30pm to 6:00pm.  Slight breeze from SW and .5 ft waves at most.  Surface temp 71 F.

Ran our boat South from the South Haven pier to drift in about 30 to 35 ft of water in front of the 1st big dune.  Nothing.  Not even a Goby.

Headed back North towards the pier and decided to try it again about halfway back.  29 ft of water.  Caught 11 perch between 9" and 12" and returned 4 smaller ones to the water.  Probably caught an equal number of Gobys.  Perch generally bit on the top hook and the Gobys bit on the bottom hook.  The only surprise came when I baited my bottom hook with a Goby tail instead of a minnow, and the 12" Perch hooked himself on it.

Got bait at 6am at Pyles Portthole. Fishing by 640am south of harbor mouth at dunes, watched sun come up. 28-35 feet of water. Slo moving (.2-.4) troll or drift all morning, never anchored. Fish mostly all 9-12", only returned one below 8". Never a double so seemed fish were scattered, no serious concentration of boats also indicating no singular concentration of fish. 45 perch in 3 hours 2 guys. Green fly from Pyles best lure. Bite backed of by 1045am so home to clean 'em and eat 'em. Back later as week wears on.

Week of 8/12 pretty tough with 2 days wind and large waves. Fished Fri 8/15 and could only land 15 in 5 hours and had to go deep to 55-60 feet. Hate pulling them up so far. Sunday 8/17 very, very slow with 4 in 3 hours and most boats moving and moving, searching in vain trying from 18 to 60 feet. Maybe some stable warmer W and SW winds weather will bring it back. Such a contrast to two days of limits 8/6 and 7. But it is fishing and not just catching!

Perching last W TH 8/7-8. Limited out in 2-3 hours each day. Started early, just before sunrise but not worth the early rise. Most of bite between 830-Noon on tail hooked minnows on gold green perch flies. Done eating them so gonna get some more end of week when storm (8/12-13) ends. Most of bite south toward nuclear plant in 33-40 feet. Killer slow trolling at.2-.4 mph to cover new ground. As usual when water gets crowded ease out of the pack and try some drifts outside of pack if wind is right. Got 5 doubles in a single one hour one period plus singles when the bite was hot, a first for me. Tossed the less than 8" back, most 8-10" and a few 12-14". Home base in Wisconsin has a 5 perch limit just awful. After 10+ years restrictive rules in Wisconsin no positive effect on perch population. Wis DNR Milwaukee mid winter perch trawl netted 10 (yes ten) perch. Quagga mussels changing food chain and easterly drift of Wis fry east across lake to stay in Michigan is giving Michiganders the luck, enjoy it and thanks. Black River Park launch at $7.00 plus Pyle's Porthole Bait near launch makes for an easy entry and exit.
