Went out of Ontanogon early this am.  National weather dorks said calm winds and 0-2' waves for the day.  When we got out it was so.  Got 6 rods up and running in 120 fow, at 1.5 mph.  Almost immediately had a hit on rod set up for steelhead--orange spoon running about 10' down.  Turned out to be an 8# laker.  Got rod re-set.  About 20 minutes later the wind picked up dramatically and waves climbed to 3-4'.  Got too rough to continue fishing, so came back in.  Local charter captain said he had been hitting lakers for the last week in 70-90 fow. Surface temp was 54 deg 4 miles out.  Subtroll started working and then stopped, not sure why, so no data on deep temp. While we were ON THE WATER the national weather service still said calm winds and 0-2' waves.  Can't predict weather on one lake accurately for an hour or two, but claim they can predict global temp 100 years from now?  BS.

Fished 7 to noon.  4/4  3 Lakers, 1 coho.  2 Lakers on wire rig 2# ball pulling lime green dodger with blue/green/red spin n glo. 1 laker on rigger pulling chart dodger and orange spin n glo.  coho on 50' copper wire pulling #4 j-plug in fire tiger ladder back.  most boats were in shallow--< 65'.  Bait shop said yesterday charter reported lakers in 110' + so we started in 110. wandered around between 85 and 120.  South wind blew waves to 2-3' whitecaps at first.  waves died off as morning went on.  no particular pattern to fish--picked up one every hour or so.  only marked a couple fish tight to bottom, no bait.  surface temp was 67.  low 40's down at 85' or deeper. tried to keep sub-troll speed 1-1.5, a bit hard with wind and waves.

Launched at 7 central time, fished till 11:30. Had to get off the lake because some little midges or something were hatching and they were so thick you could not breathe. Went 5/6-7, all lakers between 3 and 8 #. 1 on rigger set just off bottom, towing white Opti Dodger with a spin n glow tipped with 2" Gulp minnow. Two on pump handle with 2# ball bouncing on bottom towing white flasher with spin n glow tipped with gulp. Lost one on pump handle, maybe two--hard to tell when you are reeling in a 2# ball. One on 45# copper rig out 260', towing white dodger and another tipped spin n glow. Last one on a copper spoon off a dipsy set on 2.5 back 75'. Made one pass to east of harbor mouth, looking for salmon (no luck) before heading deeper. Fished 75-150 FOW. Fish came from 90-125 FOW, just about 5 miles NNE of harbor mouth. Very quick dropoff from 100-125'. Surface temp in mid to upper 60s, subtroll down 90 or so was 45 deg. Flat calm to 6 inch waves, bright sun. Wind died a couple times. Had to be the hottest trip I have ever had on the great lakes. Air temp pushing 90 even 5 miles out. Friend loves lakers--he must have way to cook the grease out of them, as I can't stand them. Except for heat and bugs, had nice time. Oh, yeah, buddy pulled in a 10' tree branch on the pump handle rig. Never saw the rod go down to the water surface and stay there before. Knew it was either a monster laker or some trash. He hauled it up from 105' down. Lots of brown water coming out of harbor due to all rain they had lately.
