Ice conditions are generally 6-10 inches on lakes and ponds in east-central Iowa. Remain cautious while ice-fishing; avoid areas with water current or discolored ice. Ice fishing has been extremely slow in and around the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area. Call area/local bait shops for the most up to date reports or the Manchester Hatchery at 563-927-3276

Anglers have been catching both bluegill and crappie on South Prairie Lake.

Black Crappie - Slow: Locate structure and use electronics to find suspended fish. Use a small ice jig tipped with a waxworm or try a minnow on a deadstick.

Bluegill - Slow: Fish evenings or early mornings for best success with small presentations. Try fishing a small ice jig tipped with a waxworm fished just off of the bottom.

Ice conditions are generally 8" inches or greater on most all lakes and ponds in east-central Iowa. Remain cautious while ice-fishing; avoid areas with water current or discolored ice. Ice fishing has been extremely slow but should pick up around the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area with warmer weather predicted ahead. Mornings and evenings have been best. Call area/local bait shops for the most up to date reports or the Manchester Hatchery at 563-927-3276 for more information.

Rivers and streams are in excellent condition. Weather and angling conditions look ideal for the upcoming weekend and into next week. Area Black Hawk County lakes are producing catches of panfish. Black Crappie - Fair: Fish 6-8 feet over structure using a crappie minnow under a slip bobber or jigging colored tube jigs.

Largemouth Bass - Good: Try casting and retrieving top water baits, spinner baits or crankbaits early morning or late evening for largemouth bass.

Interior rivers bumped up with isolated rainfall events but are still providing some fair to good angling opportunities for smallmouth bass, walleye and channel catfish. Rivers should be in good condition for the upcoming weekend. Lakes are beginning to produce some crappie. Trout streams are in excellent condition and providing some insect hatches with the warmer weather. For further information contact your area bait and tackle shops.

Anglers have been catching primarily bluegill and a few crappie out of South Prairie Lake.

Black Crappie - Fair: Cast or vertical jig using colored tube jigs or crappie minnow under a slip bobber. Target the four to eight foot depth of water along the edge of weed beds.

Bluegill - Good: Fish a piece of crawler under a bobber or casting a light jig or using a flyrod as bluegill are beginning to move on spawning beds.
