Boss Lake is located just south of Sheffield or 3 miles west of Buda, within the Mautino State Fish and Wildlife Area.
Boss Lake was created by strip-mining in the 1950's. The lake did not open to the public until 1994 because of lack of roads and restroom facilities. Boss Lake has 15.5 surface acres of water. The lake has an average depth of 34 feet deep and a max depth of 48 feet. A single lane concrete boat ramp with car/trailer parking is available.

FISHING OUTLOOK
BLUEGILL
Excellent EXCELLENT
The overall CPUE of 132 Bluegill per hour is very similar to historical records. Overall Boss Lake supports and excellent Bluegill fishery that has great trophy fish opportunities. Bluegill up to 9 inches can be found in Boss Lake, with good numbers of fish from 6-9 inches available.
LARGEMOUTH BASS
Good GOOD
A total of 119 Largemouth Bass were sampled in 2019. The CPUE of 158 fish per hour was very similar to previous years. The population is dominated by fish in the 12-15 inch range, with a few fish over 15 inches available.
HISTORY AND STATUS OF FISHERY
- The fishery is managed by species-specific surveys and fish stocking. Boss Lake receives an annual stocking of Channel catfish, Smallmouth bass and Redear sunfish.
