Just a quick update. I found out from a gentleman on Tampier that there is no cast netting of bait fish of any sort on the lake. I later found that this included all Cook County Forest Preserve ponds/lakes. Read the below from the Illinois DNR 2021 fishing regulations.

36) Sport fishermen may not use a minnow seine, minnow trap, cast net or shad scoop for bait collecting in the following water areas:

Charleston Lower Channel Lake tailwaters from that portion of the Embarras River from the Charleston Lower Channel Lake Dam downstream to the Route 130 Bridge.

Clinton Lake tailwaters from that portion of Salt Creek from the Clinton Dam downstream to the Route 10 Bridge.

Cook County Forest Preserve District Waters (except in the Des Plaines River).

Lake Decatur tailwaters from that portion of the Sangamon River from the Lake Decatur Dam downstream to the Route 48 Bridge.

Out on Tampier again today and the bite for catfish was non-stop. I caught the limit which is 6 channel catfish with no size limit, three between 2-3 lbs, one 4 lbs, one 8 lbs 20 inches and another 10 lbs 23 inches. The bite was so electric I ended up catching and releasing a number fish to stay within the creel limit. All were caught on shad.

The weather did play a big roll in the bite. We got a little rain with heavy cloud cover and high SW winds. Rain was not enough to get drenched and it was very brief. Also I netted a monster shad which I took a pic of. He almost filled out the bottom of my 5 lb bucket.

I went out August 4th. I caught 2 small channel cats and 1 18 incher. I decided to bring my cast net and was able to net over 5 dozen shad. Fish are definitely eating these things. Large fish were breaking the water in the middle of the shad schools to feed. I caught all 3 catfish on cut shad.

Went out to Tampier yesterday for a little bit to check the ice. Middle section was still open water but the area I fished was a solid 3 inches of clear ice and about an inch of white ice on top. Drilled a few holes but couldn’t mark any fish at all. Please check as you go out. I was a little nervous with part of the lake being open water. Tight lines!
