Went down to gather a few small gills for catfish bait and was just fishing off shore with crawlers and a bobber.. In 45 minutes I caught a dozen, but to my surprise, half weren't "bait" size..

Ended up with 6 that were very nice gills, which became an unexpected dinner!!

I'll be hauling the canoe down this weekend for more!!

I went down Wednesday to see if ice was out. There was a barricade on path at south send with a sign. "Lake closed. No ice fishing'  Still ice on most of lake. Open water around foot bridge. I went yesterday thinking warm temps would have melted ice. Still just open around foot bridge. I tried with ice fishing jig and wax worm for 15-20 minutes .Nothing. Water is gin clear and never saw anything moving.

This page is beginning to turn into a one man show, but I hope others will read it and get some value out of the information.

I went out in my kayak last week at around 4pm and trolled with one pole that had a 1/8 ounce jig w/ a small Berkley minnow at around 15 feet deep. On the other pole I had a crawler on a floating jighead. The depth I was working was about 15-25 feet. I caught 2 bass (16 inch and 12 inch), 1 crappie, and a ton of small/medium bluegill.

Yeah. At this time of year I go after them on deep weedlines around 30 feet deep. A slip bobber is what I usually use. I've also caught decent sized gills around shorelines in structure.

are you using a slip bobber setup whisperer to get gills?

The lake was quiet today. I caught eight 7-inch range bluegill with nightcrawler pieces, and a nice 17-inch bass. I was out from 1-4pm, and saw some BIG catfish swimming around north of the bridge. It was kinda surprising to see them out midday near the surface in deep water.

There is nothing mentioned in the lake specific section of the Illinois Fishing Regulation booklet under Lake Victoria, or in the rules that the city gives you when you buy your trailer sticker about special size limit regulations. Didn't see any new signs when I was out 2 weeks ago, I would think the regs would have to be posted somewhere for the city to start giving out fines.

So I have heard from a lot of people that it is tough to catch bass on anything but live bait at Lake Victoria. I've fished deep drops with nightcrawlers and caught fish, but last night throwing different crankbaits I saw 3 big bass swim right past them without even looking twice. This has happened on several other occasions as well.

Has anyone consistently caught bass here on artificial lures, or am I wasting my time?

Caught quite a few decent gills yesterday. Redworms on the bottom close to structure. Lake was pretty busy with kayaks and boats for how small it is. A lot of people must not know about the new regs or maybe just ignore them because a few folks were catching small (<3") gills for bait. A lot ignore the rule about life jackets, too. They're really not such an encumbrance and if it'll save me a fine, I'll wear gladly wear one.
