Decided to fish Fox Lake today.  I don’t know.  I guess because I like the challenge of finding fish in the Dead Sea.  Drilled a lot of holes because I enjoy the exercise- it’s a lot of work holding an electric auger!   Put out an APB for the weeds in the lake.   Not holding my breathe.  Saw a few marks on the flasher but could have been all the air bubbles surfacing.  Decided to drop a few wax worms in the hole so I can pretend that the red lines were fish.  Ah, entertainment comes so easy these days.  Only saw a few people out and heard lots of drilling.  So, no tight lines for us....

Captain,

Can you still access the lake at Mineola Hotel? Been years since I’ve tried.. also can you use an ATV from the new bar you spoke of? Thanks for info

FYI:  New ownership at the Old Hidden Point Bar on Fox Lake.  The new name is Famies.

The unfriendly Biker Bar is Gone.  Place has been remodeled. The old circular bar is back in as well as great burgers, a friendly atmosphere and a Friday Fish Fry.

The new owners welcome ice fisherman to come park in their lot.  keep it clean, respect the property, and come in after your fishing and have a beer and a burger if you like.

The best sign living here for 17 years is half the neighborhood was there.  Had a Burger and it was Great!!

Good luck to the new owners, they are good people.

Fished Mineola Bay Basin 10:00 to 4:00.  Ice 12 in or more everywhere I drilled.  Cannot comment on anywhere I did not drill for the critics out there.  Drilled over 50 holes, yes over 50.  Dead sea everywhere until I made my way toward the Russian/Polish guys.  Spoke with them and they invited me over.  Flasher lit up like a Christmas tree.  Frank and Ernest were also over there.  Been fishing Fox Lake for over 17 years and all of those guys are people you want to pay attention to.  All of those guys except Ernest and myself put on a fishing clinic.

Yellow Bass are back in a big way and chunky.  Frank fished with no bait only a small cast master and caught at least 20 plus in the 2 hours I was with them.  Changed to his presentation and managed one decent Yellow.  Goes to show you that some understand the presentation better than others.  All the Russian/Polish guys did well.  A healthy mix if Yellow Bass, White Bass, Crappie.

Yesterday was a Fail for me in terms of fish and a big win for me spending time with generous talented folks that helped me understand better how to fish the Chain.

Tight lines Captn"Patrick

Minneola Bay has a lot of snow and ice was only 2-3” under the snow. Tried for catfish in the morning with no bites. Left around 10 because fishing stunk and ice was sketchy.

Hi, I am fairly new to ice fishing especially to the Chain of Lakes. I plan on heading out to the Chain this weekend and looking for some advice. I do not expect to be informed about someone's secret spots or techniques, just looking for some general tips and advice on which lakes and areas I should target. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thank you. Please P.M. if necessary, thank you once again.

I went out on Thursday. I was fishing from shore by the small park near the train station. I spent about 2 hours fishing with minnows and a small rapala. Didn't get a single bite. I talked to a guy fishing for channel cat's and he had no luck either. I guess it's still a little to early to go fishing.

March 2 Mineola bay followed some guys out about 400 yds straight out from the hotel 8-9 FOW. Marked fish as soon as the Vex went in. Caught the end of a white bass school and then the drum moved in. 8 whites largest 11" and 10 drum largest 16" plus a dink crappie. Fished 8:30am to 1:00pm. Minnows and 1/16 swedish pimple tipped with a waxie tight to the bottom. All in all a good day. Tough walk with snow and slush but worth it.
