DEER HIDE, HAIR ON TANNING

Anybody tan their own deer hides before? Watching alot of videos and it seem there are several ways to do it, I don't know which is better???

Pickling is vinegar and salt brine. I left mine in a couple days. Then rinsed with baking soda/water to neutralize the hide. From what I understand the vinegar/salt plumps the skin so the bacteria can't hide from the treatment. The tanning solution didn't call for that step at all but I did it anyway. Probably didn't have to. It took a couple days for the hide to dry out enough to apply the tanning solution after the pickle. 

All cool things!    I am just confused on a couple of the steps after salting for aprox 2 days?   Is the pickeling in vinegar and salt water for 2-3 days? And then soak in dish soap and water for a day?  Rinse and dry?  I just dont want to miss a step. 

Hide tanning formula at Cabelas in Green Bay. It's by the trapping stuff. There was a little hair that fell out around the bullet hole and the thicker leather off the neck didn't lay down the way I wanted so I just trimmed it off. Otherwise so far so good. Good luck. 

WS,  where did you get your tanning solution/oil?

I did a hide with my dad probably 20+yrs ago. I think he did most of the leg work. lol. 

That hide today still looks great but shedding terribly. I have 2 in the freezer to do myself. Like you mentioned, warmer weather (spring) sounded like the best time to do it outside. I also agree with the pressure washer. Key is getting all the fat and meat off the hide. 

I did one this year. Salted, rinsed, scraped, scraped again, rinsed, pickled, dried, trappers tanning solution, dried and break. If I did it over I would have waitied for warmer weather and used a pressure washer to flesh. But it turned out really nice and we've walked all over it and the hair stays in for the most part. Smells like leather. Looks great. It isn't as soft as some but definitely makes a nice throw rug. My kids love walking on it.
