Public meeting set on relocating public access site on Lower Genesee Lake Published: October 22, 2014 by the Southeast Region Contact(s): John Olson, DNR state boat access engineer, 608-267-7484 SUMMIT, Wis. - The public will have an opportunity to review and comment on plans to relocate an existing public access on Lower Genesee Lake to a nearby state-owned parcel. Lower Genesee Lake is located in the Town of Summit in Waukesha County, just south of the City of Oconomowoc. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has developed plans to move the current public access on the lake to a nearby state-owned parcel located on the northwest shoreline. Work at the site will consist of the construction of an access road from the parking lot to the launch area, and a new concrete launch with a boarding dock. The access road will be one-way traffic from the existing parking lot to the boat ramp, and then exit to the north though an existing access point. One handicap car trailer parking spot will be constructed near the launch site, and a portable toilet will be placed at the launch site with a three-sided enclosure around the toilet. The DNR held an informational meeting in October 2013 to present the preliminary development plans and receive input from local residents and other interested parties. DNR staff adjusted the final plans to address some of the concerns and recommendations received at that meeting. Because the project planning was largely completed before April 1, 2014, DNR staff prepared an environmental analysis for this project under the requirements of the previous version of Ch. NR 150, Wis. Admin. Code. The environmental analysis is available for review on the DNR website at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/EIA/Current.html, at the DNR Waukesha Service Center, 141 NW Barstow St., Suite 180, Waukesha, WI, 53188, or copies are available from John Olson, state boat access engineer at 608-267-7484 or Johnm.Olson@Wisconsin.gov. The proposed action is not anticipated to result in significant adverse environmental effects. The public informational meeting will be held on Wednesday Nov. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m., at Village of Summit Town Hall, address 2911 N. Dousman Road, Oconomowoc, WI 53066. Written public comments on the environmental assessment are welcome and must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday Nov. 21. Written comments can be sent to John Olson, state boat access engineer, Wisconsin DNR, PO Box 7921, Madison, WI 53707-7921 or sent by email to Johnm.Olson@Wisconsin.gov. Under state rules, it is the goal of the State of Wisconsin to provide, maintain, and improve access to navigable waters of the state. To do this, DNR works with local units of government, other state and federal agencies, and citizens to acquire, develop, maintain and improve public access sites. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also regulates the discharge of fill material into federal waters and wetlands, therefore a General Permit or Letter of Permission may be required under the Clean Water Act. This project is being funded using Federal Sports Fish Restoration funds. The engineering plans are being prepared by Yaggy Colby Assoc., Delafield for the Wisconsin Department of Administration and the DNR. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2015.
