Guides gifting their limit to clients?

Gordon, I know there's tons of cormorants on Green Bay but what about the crazy Pelicans inland. I've seen those things swimming around in groups of 30 and 40 gobbling up everything. And they stay here year-round not just passing through. Never used to see them around here only on Lake of the Woods.I agree they should have a season on cormorants those things are nasty....... never suggested guides gifting fish was the most detrimental thing to fish populations but that it circumvents possession limit laws and may not be the most ethical or resource- friendly practice. Some guides feel it's important to educate Anglers and I guess some feel it's important to feed them🤣🤣

G51, Yeah, i guessed that and I've checked Facebook, surprisingly the same guys that show up on an internet search are the same ones that have Facebook pages. Its almost like the guys that are trying to make a living at guiding have figured out how to advertise.  

Cormorants and pelicans take more fish than there are gifted fish. Just ask anyone who fished  Leech  lake in MN a while back. Cormorants depleted the walleye population to the point the MN  DNR almost shut down fishing there. They ended getting permission to shoot a protected bird And the walleyes came back. 

All right thanks. I will look at the study. I think a lot of people nowadays advertise on this thing called Facebook. Seems pretty popular I myself don't use it. I'm  guessing you might own Google stock. I'm just kidding around but if you do own stock, I would not doubt Google is a part of your portfolio, which would not be a bad move by the way😁 happy 4th of July weekend everybody.

G51, I agree the Google registered businesses and internet search isnt going to capture every guide service out there but it will capture a good percentage of them, and provides a better estimate than guessing.  A person I cant say there's 10 guide services in Minocqua and then 50 pop up, nor can they say there are 300 and 10 pop up.  In today's world it would be hard for any business to make it without some internet presence.  Dont necessarily have to have a full blown website but need to show up with at with a business name, location and phone number.  The internet is effectively today's yellowpages.

Here's one to take a look at, it specifically was trying to get an estimate of the impact of catch and release fishing on Mille Lacs, ties in live bait vs artificial and water temps.  If you scroll the literature cited you can find plenty of other related studies, or just use the Google Machine its pretty easy to find all kinds of delayed mortality research.

I was just joking and as I stated numerous times a lot of those delayed mortalities are very specific to specific variables. Why don't you show me one? I would actually really be interested. Don't want one about gut hooking muskies or pulling crappies out of 40 ft of water or anything like that. Everything is an estimate. And I'm not sure about your number of guides on Google. Might not be the most accurate but it might be but it might not be.

G, if you made the pie chart how did you come up with the fish killed from fish gifted by guides.  This number is by far the hardest to come up with, not all guides gift fish, cant really base it off of photos posted unless they are posting every day so you see the good days and the bad.  I suspect guides only post when they've had good days, so that can skew things making people believe they are catching limits every day. I based my sliver of pie on the number of registered inland guide businesses for WI on Google, and verified by doing a handful of internet searches for a fishing guide in the major fishing areas in the North as if I were a tourist looking for a guide.  The other pieces are pretty easy to come up with from creel surveys,  tribes reporting speared fish and research shows the general mortality rate for catch and release fish, its higher than the 5% I mentioned for properly handled and released fish   I'm curious of your methodolgy for determining the number of gifted fish, and how big that piece is in relation to these pieces.

You guys should take a look at the Turtle flambeau flowage reports. Guy on there talking about how bad it is to pull a musky out of the net for pics but yet has done it for a tournament. Said he always net releases, until another called him on it. Not pointing fingers but seems it’s ok for some and not ok for others. Of course this guy had a reason why it was ok for him to do so. Some of the hypocrisy on this site truly amazes me. At the end of the day we’re all trying to enjoy the outdoors. 

Grace I assure you if I made that pie chart it would not look like that🤣 might not be total of you accurate but would look a little different. I really don't get bent out of shape over this but I think the gifting thing is getting around The Possession limit law and was not the intent of the law... Catch and Release mortality I believe is a guess at best. Many variables in the delayed mortality studies such as deep water, warm water etc etc I just like fishing and catching fish and do my best to preserve the resource. Keep walleyes that are from Waters that have excellent reproduction and there a lot of 13 and 14 in fish. Usually take the males. Like to eat bluegills Harvest from lakes that have a lot of 7.5 inch fish, throw them back on waters  that have 8 and 1/2 to 10 in. As I said originally I just wanted some other people's opinions and it's been interesting.

G51, if you made a pie chart of how fish were killed, the biggest slices would be from licensed fisherman directly harvesting fish,  fish that died from the catch and release process, and fished speared.  Then a small sliver of the pie would be fish gifted by a guide.  Sorry I'm not worried about this sliver.

A hoot🤣 that's a funny, could have been worse. I think you're exaggerating our words a little. There are already things happening recently that haven't happened. Closing down Minocqua chain, walleye bag limits going from 5 to 3:. Looks like a lot of people would agree that the willow Flowage is not what it was a few years ago. Lower panfish limit there. And yes maybe guides aren't solely responsible for this but sending clients home with double limits sure isn't helping

Wright/G51, you guys are a hoot.  There's thousands of guides out there gifting fish but cant pay their bills because its tough to make a living as guide. Then there's guides that have clients in the morning and clients in the afternoon and these guides are gifting 2 limits a day.  These guys have to be making a killing double-booked like that. I suspect these are the handful of guides that pony up the $150 bucks for a website, and make social media post.  The other thousands of guides are too broke to pay for a website domain and get clients telepathically. Then it appears that no one can catch a fish without a guide on this thread, but if you go over to the FFS thread, you guys are crying that modern electronics are making it so easy for guys to catch a fish that it's destroying the fishing.   I think you guys just might like complaining. 

All of the above Grace.  There are a lot of shady people and unfortunately many are guides.  $40 for a license, we have an overload of guides around.  Many catch a hot bite and fizzle out but there are plenty of accomplished guides doing this and they know who they are.  I feel as if you’re living under a rock or just haven’t been North of 8 in a long time.  Times are really hard up here for many and guiding is a very tough occupation to make a living at.  Many think it’s a lucrative job but find out quickly it’s not.  Those are most of your black marketers.

I would say it's not unrealistic to think that if a guide has clients and knows they want to keep some fish, sending them home with more fish or maybe even keeping fish that would normally be released, larger females could definitely influence the tip. If this isn't true what's the point of keeping any fish at all then. And if sending home clients with extra fish in hopes of a bigger tip isn't selling of them well then it's darn close ain't it🤔

Grace, your comment about Buddy's gifting more fish on a given day than guides has a lot of variables. Are you talking Statewide perhaps that's true are you talking County wise might be true but I don't think your statement holds true for specific lakes. Lake that a guide may be hitting multiple times a week and definitely multiple times a year. If you think guys are going out with there Buddies and catching limits by themselves I would have to think you're wrong. And if they are they are probably releasing them because they don't have the Mighty Dollar hanging in front of them. Is it possible we could both be right on this one??
