Waterfowl Hunting
2022 Waterfowl Reports
Hunted North this past weekend and the blow Friday did bring down some fresh birds, mostly GWT, Mallard, and seen some Gadwall too. Sunday AM not very many ducks or geese at all that's how it goes get while you can. Ive gone back and forth with my hunting buddys on places that hold birds and its been same old o leave um leave um for later, I like to kill ducks so I will if guys want to hold off on a spot great but its been my experience that when you let them alone the next time their gone! Bird in hand!
Goodhuntin all and be safe out there.
Saturday was the first I hunted that spot. I had killed the first 3 that came in done by 4pm. Picked up and backed way off and watched the hole tel dark had around 40 drop in for the roost. Got there Sunday morning well before shooting time. Sat in the same spot where I watched them the night waiting for them to leave before setting up they where gone. I've also played this game all time to better to bust up a roosting spot.
tr ... it is possible you only saw 4 in the morning because you hunted the same spot the afternoon before and shot 3 while educating others. I realize it is tough for the working man to not hunt the same spot on both Sat/Sun. I am fortunate to be retired now so I try not to hunt the same hole on consecutive days. My best spot is a roost and I avoid shooting when the flocks are leaving at dawn. Instead, I try to pick them off as the first ones return and then slip out as quickly as possible so the bulk of the birds continue to feel safe. East Central Wisconsin and those woody flocks hang around that roost when feeling safe until early November in a normal season.
Panks this cold was set up prefect with themoon for teal and wood ducks to migrate at night with the clear sky and for new birds to come in. Granted not all left but for me I noticed a decent amount moved on. I hunted one of my favorite wood duck holes yesterday afternoon. Saw a good amount after I got my 3. Went back this morning only saw 4. But remember with them little ducks moving out big ducks will be coming.
Been at this game for over 50 years. Shot several locally banded ducks in mid-November. Most of the locally bred birds are not gone on October 9th, but they are being educated. Patterns have changed and refuges and other hideaways have been found by many. I shot 3 yesterday and all were young birds who hadn’t earned their diplomas yet. Hope the 5-day vacation encourages the ducks to relocate again. Need ample rain in my area or my spots will freeze over fast if we get some low 20 degree nights.
