Lots of swans migrating today.  In the north, many shallow marshes and smaller ponds were iced over.

Saw 500+ mallards roosting on a deeper farm pond today.  Pic below shows about 40% of the pond area that had birds.

Bird numbers were 100 times more today in the southern part of the state than previous weekends.  Prob seen 1000 mallards and as many geese. Finally had a little flooding in the corn to bring some down. So many flying really high. Shooting was great on mallards and geese. Will post some pics of a baked duck from the oven.

Scouted for bout 5 hours today all over. Found good amount of local birds (wood ducks, mallard, geese) in typical mid season locations. Found a fun hunt for tomorrow. Seen good amount of swans, mergs, and some bufflehead.

Another great day in the outdoors.  Tons of wind and rain/mist early.  The 2 bluebill limit definitely makes duck ID a high priority.  Got a limit of bluebills (2 immature drake greater scaup), 2 drake canvasbacks, immature drake goldeneye, and a hen surf scoter.  The dark, gloomy, and misty day made ID'ing redheads difficult until the last second, then they were usually too close at some crazy shot angle to effectively harvest them....so none taken.

this should ruffle some feathers.

the south zone should open a week earlier, and the split should be a week later.. they let the early birds move through unscathed during the split every year.. than there's a lull   great

Freeguide,  We've been rather thin on the wood ducks over on the westside in the Mississippi backwaters. Decent opening weekend then rather low numbers since then. I blame the low water levels over summer and into fall.
