Birdyboy, really? October17th? The birds will be pretty darn skittish by then for sure. Or maybe not as the pressure of early season will be off.Might be a bit of Genius on your part. You may want to bring a Howitzer just in case…HA!  Good Luck.

Preliminary reports from family in Manitowish and Mercer sound OK. Too many leaves up still but the bumped into a few birds on short walks between pulling the piers and boats. I cannot wait to get up!

Fishing for cats, if you are planning on grouse hunting the first week of October then text me back. I primarily hunt Taylor, Rusk and Price counties. Been doing so for 25 years now. Even in down years I’ve always had luck finding birds…just have to read the cover.

Clueless!

Get out there!  I shot my first grouse in pouring rain!  And I hunt in the rain all the time. Birds who flew down from the trees early in the day will congregate around the conifers when the rain starts. Go get em!

I am so jealous of all you guys for getting out in the early weeks. I can’t get up until October 17th. Please leave a few for me.

Not much to report today. Took the the dogs over by the hunting shack. we walked for about 1.5 hrs, 1 flush and I missed. Next week we will take our camper 60-70 miles northwest and spend about 3 days there. Better habitat, and any serious grouse hunter now’s it’s all about being in the right habitat.

Wet weekend coming up which is never great forbird hunting.

Got out for another 2 hr walk this afternoon. Comfortable temps and calmer winds. 2 flushes.

Hunted 2 hours this afternoon under less than ideal conditions. Very windy and then had about a 20 minute rain shower. Flushed 3 and got 2 shots, bagged 1 bird. Dogs were birdy multiple times and may have flushed more birds but I never heard them with the wind gusts.

My 11 month old came up to me w/ about 8 quills in her face and tongue. They pulled out easily. I never did see the porcupine.

Went out hunting in Waushara county for an hour and 1/2 with the little one. We were able to put up 6. They were in pairs of 3’s, 2’s and a single. We hunted in a 4 year old logged out hardwoods area with pines. No shots, 1 flushed in front of us, 2 flushed behind us and other 3 flushed on the opposite side of a pine. I was only able to mount once before it disappeared. It was a fun day of learning. I wasn’t expecting to get out but I had to scratch the itch.

Saw 4 birds on Saturday and 1 on Sunday. No shots. Was a nice start to the year.  Very short walks.

I hunted about 3 hrs today. I hunt w/ labs a 11y/o and 11 month old. Picture is my pup w/ her first bird. We flushed 7 birds, only had 1 shot.
Talked to some friends that run pointers one had 9 flushes the other 8. Both had short hunts due to the warmer temps.

Hunter and Hound:

I can’t get up north this weekend. I’m officiating my nieces wedding. Some things just have to take priority I guess.

Good luck out there. Hope you find loads of birds!

Why wouldn't you get out a little?  It's opening weekend!

It's probably going to be too warm and wet to do an all day thing, but I'm going to get the dogs out for a bit.

Too hot and too many bugs for me and the dogs. Plus I can’t hit anything with all that green up.

Anyone hunting this weekend? Might take an early short walk either Saturday or Sunday. To warm later in the day.
