Upland/Small Game
Bob white quail
A few years back, we were hunting grouse in Mercer and ran into three large coveys in the middle of the woods. The public land abutted some private property and I know the owner. He trains his dogs all year on quail so I am sure they were his. Dog went on point by a large fallen tree and like 30 of the little buggers came running out. I was shocked.
Pine Island, Ottawa in Southern KM, Bong Rec Area, Solon Springs, Yellowstone any quail you find on these propoerties are directly from dog training and field trials with designations as either class 1 or class 2 field trial grounds. if you happen to utilize these grounds, be thankful to the pointing dog clubs in the state as they are the ones who improve and maintatin these grounds
About 10 years ago, I shot one. I think it was at Pine Island. My guess is that it was planted for dog training.
About 40 years ago we kicked up a big covey of them, which I assumed were wild. If memory serves me correctly, it was in the Brooklyn PHG.
Both times we were hunting pheasants.
