I’m not sure how common it is, but the first Tom I ever harvested had three beards.
Multi bearded turkeys
I've killed a few multiple bearded birds. My biggest bird ever weighed 28#, had 3 beards and 1.5" spurs. I think I've killed 4 or 5 that had two beards...including this bird from April 24 this year, which had 10.5" and 11.25" beards and 1.25" spurs.
Sorry the pic kinds sucks...I was by myself and had to prop my phone up with a stick and use the Smile Shutter to snap a few photos.
I haven’t harvested a turkey with multiple beards. I did have a bearded hen that came around my blind several times. I usually didn’t pay much attention to her, but one time she got within 20 feet of my blind and I thought there was a second beard. Used the spotting scope to confirm that, one beard was 6” and pencil size the others about 4” and lighter yet.
Out of over 40 turkeys shot, 1 had 4 beards 2 long 2short another had 2, both long 4 beard er was 3 years old and weighted 28 1/4 lbs. 2 beard er was 2 year old have talked to others said 1 in 30 to 40 average. just my experience.
Genetics. Once a turkey grows past the Jake (juvenile) stage, beard size and number has nothing to do with age.
