New Sled Pricing

Wow have times changed!

Typically I buy a new sled once my sled gets around 5,000 or so miles on it. 

At the end of last year my 800 Indy crossed the 5k threshold.

Typically I’d buy a new sled, but I looked at new Polaris 800’s, and the pricing is around 15k! I about spit my teeth out!!!

No way I am spending that on a sled when I average 1200- 1500 or so miles per season! 

The season is too short to spend 15k on a sled. I am in a holding pattern for now, just take super good care of the stuff you already have and make it last as long as you can!

I'm by no means wealthy but I can afford most luxuries that I would want.  If I lived somewhere that I could utilize a sled frequently I would pony up the money for a new sled.. main reason being I am not handy..Dad is not and was not handy growing up.. most mechanical repairs that a vast majority of people can make I just cannot without watching YouTube videos. I like to buy things that are low maintenance. I lease vehicles and recently bought a new sxs..I can do things like change oil but would not want to buy anything fixer upper

New sled pricing is crazy, I dont get how quickly they went up? No way I will ever pay that much for a sled!!

Add in gas on the way up, eating out 3 times a day, 50 a gallon for 2 stroke oil, mileage on the truck, hotel room…

You certainly have to enjoy it. 

Similar to boating, it’s an expensive hobby!

Wow that is crazy. Roughly $2/ mile in depreciation alone, add in insurance, gas, registration/ trail passes, maintenance probably over $3/ mile.

My oldest just purchased a Ski-Doo Enduro.

Was 18k out the door. 

He’s 25, not married, no kids, and has a good job.  He’s pretty much living for him right now lol!

I’m happy for him, but that’s not in Dad’s budget hehe!

These are a FAR cry from my teenage years in high school when I saved some coin from my summer job and bought a brand new Moto-Ski 440 for $499.00. Beat the living crap out of that sled for 3 years and traded it in on a new Ski-Doo that ran me $950.00.

Last sled I purchased was a new 2016 Indy 800 SP.

I paid 8k for that in 2017.

The new ones are double that, and 16K isn’t in the budget lol!

Dealer just finished up with my sled, 1,000 bucks. Money well spent - now we just need some snow!

Brent, that's the reason I still ride the 02 polaris classic and the 03 800 REV's. Big bucks for a new one. When my sons friend bumped a tree last year the only reason I was upset was that I didn't think I would be able to get a new bumper, hood and hood decals. I was able to find everything but the 800 REV decals that go on each side of the hood. I just got back from the cabin. Cleaned all the carbs and rebuilt one fuel pump on the 02 classic. I got the trail stickers in the mail when I was up. Just have to stick them on and I be ready. Like I mentioned to you and suspended, we need to get together for a ride this year. JJ

I would love to buy a new one also, and I can, but I too could never justify the $ for the 1000 miles/year I usually put on my machine.

I snowmobiled all the time when I was a kid up through my college years.  Once I moved away from home and got married, it took my teenage son buying a pristine 1997 Indy Trail for $800 in 2017 to get me back into it.  When I saw all the fun he was having for very little money, I went out and bought a used 2005 Polaris Indy SuperSport fan cooled machine for $1500 with under 2000 miles.  I rode that for over 3500 additional miles, before the motor expired. I took the $400 the shop gave me for it and bought a used 2005 Polaris Indy XC SP in excellent condition for relatively low $.  I've had great fun on that machine, very nimble and fast.  If that one blows up, I will just pay to have it completely rebuilt.

For reference, how much were you paying for a new sled before covid? I buy used so never really know what they new ones go for.
