Ice Fishing Musky

I watched a fishing show today showing anglers catching musky through the ice with tip ups.

They said they were fishing southeastern Wisconsin, I know the fish regulations say musky season closes December 31( open water only).  Are there special lakes with different regulations that allow musky fishing through the ice!

There was a rule change proposed this year to change the season statewide and it included "open water only". So you might have to get it in this year before Dec 31. If we have ice.

The current Southern Zone (inland waters south of Highway 10/Waldo Blvd) Muskellunge season runs from the first Saturday in May to Dec. 31 (ice angling allowed), and the Northern Zone (inland waters north of Highway 10, Waldo Blvd—excluding WI/MN boundary waters) season runs from the Saturday prior to Memorial Day to Dec. 31 (on open water only--ice angling prohibited). The proposed season structure is an open harvest season running from the first Saturday in May to December 31 on open water only.

Thought it was a great show, very cool sight-fishing the musky, and then setting up on where it was seen.  Just couldn't believe the suckers weren't tripping the tip-up non-stop!  Well, maybe they were, just not filmed.....

The pic below is from the WI Fishing Regs for 2022/23.  Only the "Northern" musky zone states "open water only".  So below Hwy 10 ("Southern" zone), unless otherwise noted by some individual lake regulation, you can ice fish muskies to December 31st.
