Warmouth

My son and I were out in Polk Co. on Saturday afternoon, having a good time with bluegills.  He pulls up another fish and said "Dad, what IS this?"

It was a Warmouth.  Anyone know of a limit on them?  Or are they like Rock Bass and no limit?

I think that's just a big green sunfish.  Real pretty!  there are a few lakes that have hybrid pumpkinseed/bluegills, but they're rare.  They get real big like a bluegill but have the colors and mouth of a pumpkinseed. Hard to tell that they're hybrid, but I know someone who catches them on a lake that he won't give any information out about where he catches them (I know the lake, but not the spot).

Well at least I'm not the only one not 100% sure what it is lol. It looks different than the normal pumpkinseeds that I catch so I'm leaning towards Gillespie as a green sunfish/pumpkin hybrid. It was a dandy at 10.5" whatever it was!

Body size and shape doesn't look like a green.  Looks like a regular sunfish or sunfish/bluegill hybrid.  I didn't think the greens get that big.  Could be wrong though.

Junkie the ones like that we catch we call them pumpkin seed. I might be wrong?!? We include that in our daily limit along with/ other panfish.

100% that it has some, maybe all?, green sunfish genetics.  The yellowish edges to the fins a dead giveaway.   The coloration patterns lead me to think this is a green sunfish/pumpkinseed sunfish hybrid.  Nice fish!

My son caught this earlier this year, I believe it's a green sunfish but I'm not positive. Any thoughts?

Warmouth are grouped as a panfish, not rock bass, and follow WI or local panfish regulations. Rock bass on the contrary have no size limit or bag limit. They would count as a separate species when fishing a lake that has a specific bag limit for individual species, such as lake Eau Claire.

For reference from the DNR website: DNR definitions

I do feel like people often confuse warmouth and green sunfish, I know I have.

It was about 8" long.  Had quite a bit more meat on the filets than a gill, both top steak and belly meat.

I’ve caught Warmouth on Phantom Lake In Mukwonago. They don’t quit fighting after you get them in the boat. They have a few less spines than a Rock Bass but make up for it with energy. One thing I didn’t know until tis morn was Rock Bass have permanently Red Eyes and Warmouth only when spawning. The one I caught was spawning apparently. And yes, it got me with one of its spines.

Fishfillet you are 100% correct. They are different. They are also lumped in with Rock bass as they are not specified on the panfish species list for the 25 fish creel limit. I have already discussed this with a warden. I have never fished a lake where they are prevalent, so it would be difficult to catch and keep more than 25 in my opinion.

It's a panfish. All part of the panfish limit.   Green sunfish and warmouth are two different kinds of fish.  Warmouth have more of a rock bass color and Green sunfish resemble more of a sunfish/bluegill in color.

Almost positive it would be whatever bluegill are. In the regs I think it combines bluegill, sunfish pumpkinseed, and green sunfish which I think is what a warmouth is.
