With several days of warm temps and not really dropping below freezing at night, what will this do to the ice?
New to ice fishing, so I don't have years of experience to go off. But I would guess in the short term, not much just make a sloppy mess on top. If temps continue then ice will start to thin.
Drill a hole and look for corn ice on the top or see tunneling from underneath. Tunneling is when little fingers of water poke up into the ice from the bottom up. We are far from that now in Green Bay area but as soon as it warms up non fishing folk will think you're crazy, but you know you're sitting on over a foot of very solid ice enjoying being outside.
Almost nothing in the short term. But yes slop on top could be a factor. The best weather is warm days/cool nights once we have this much as snow turns to slush then back to ice at night. It takes a ton of energy to melt this much ice, and longer days and sun angle play almost as big a role as temperature. That's why warmer temps in January and February do almost nothing to ice, then mid March hits and it starts to go fast as soon as it warms up.
