I used my brothers 6" k-drill over the weekend. My conclusion is that K-drill sucks!!! You can't use when outside temps get below 10 degrees or else it will freeze water around the chipper blades and the pilot blade rendering the auger useless unless you sit there and chip all the ice away each time you go to use it. So much for run and gun. I also notice my M18 drill/driver was working overtime to punch holes through 10 inches of ice. I can't imagine good battery life of my 5 amp battery if ice was 15 inches or more. I was fishing with a friend and he had the 6" Eskimo pistol bit. OMG that auger is smooth! Start slow and let the blades catch the ice and then you can give it all you got. Slices ice away like butter fast! I know a lot of you k-drill fanboys will give my heat for this but it's from my experience with k-drill. I will sell my nils and buy the pistol bit for my clam plate. The nils is nice but it's too long and heavy compared to the k-drill and eskimo setups. Thanks for reading and feel free to comment/bash on this post.
K-Drill vs Esikmo pistol bit 2019
I own a 8 inch K-drill with the Milwaukee Fuel drill. Never had any issues like you describe. It doesn't freeze up on me and I do lay it on the ice. I get about 25-30 holes on a 5AH battery.
Not sure what the deal is with your brothers k-drill, but from my experience I've not had any issues that you describe.
