My son and I are making our first trip to Hayward, Wi. Well be staying in a cabin on the south end of Lake Nelson.

Any advice about ice fishing this area  would be greatly appreciated.

We’re fishing the middle of February.

You’re on very good water. If you’re trying tip ups don’t forget to use some dead bait this time of year. Gods luck to you and your sun.

Fishing the edges of the river channel holds all species of fish. Finding some cribs is a plus.

Be aware, Nelson Lake was drawn down 5 or 6 feet before it iced up. I haven't been there yet this winter but it may be the old river channel is the only place left to fish till they refill the lake this spring. Contact Tom Leahy Guide Service.

We fished Nelson Lake for the first time this summer. We caught lots of Crappie drifting straight of from the dam. I would guess that they crappie may stay in the basin flat in the same area during the winter. I didn't find a lot of structure to fish other than some stumps sticking out of the water. But I have never ice fished Nelson Lake.
