Best walleye set up for tip ups
1/25/15 @ 11:33 PM
I used to use the heavier black line with a metal leader and treble, and would catch more Northern. I was sick of little ones swallowing the hook, so I switched to the premade mono leaders with a #4 hook. A friend was catching walleyes this way. This year I've had a number of drops. Anyways a guy I fished with caught a few walleyes recently and says I should go with colored beads before a mono leader and a treble with a single hook stinger. He also had a thinner red line on his tip up. I know it takes a lot of things beside setup but wondering if lighter line and a treble is a better change. Just wondering what others targeting walleyes are using.

You're going to find a very wide range of setups. 95% of the time, I typically use a 20# Fireline leader with a #8 red treble hook and a sinker about 10-12" up from the hook. For Walleyes, I like to keep it simple. If the water is dark OR if I am with a bunch of guys with similar setups and we aren't catching anything, then will adding a bead or two onto the leader.
I tend use medium shiners the most. One other thing I will use if the bite seems slow is DK Powder on the tail of the minnow to add color.
My all around walleye setup. FrabIll thermal tIp up. 20 lb maIn lIne to small swIvel. 6lb floro leader that's about 2 feet in length. 1 small glow in the dark bead above a small #10 red treble. one tiny split shot 10 inches up to keep the small shiners I like to use down.
First thing is be sure that your tip-ups spin very smooth when they are in the cold. Walleye are touchy with that. I prefer using either 6 or 8 pound fluorocarbon leaders with small trebles. I vary the leader length depending on depth im fishing and water clarity. Dark shallow water i go about 2 feet on the leader. Deeper gion clear water i will go 6 to 8 feet at times. And for beads and such yes i use them but mainly in darker water. I find that in clear water less is more. Experiment with what minnows you use on a given lake also. I see a lake to lake preferance there also. One lake its a sucker they want and the next it will be a shiner. I also like large fatheads which seem to be a happy medium for most lakes. And one easy way to have easy change leaders is tie on a snap to the tip-up line and pre make varying leaders so you can snap on and go. Or make a change on the lake without much hassle.
One more thing. I do not use stingers on my setups. I hook the minnows just behind the head. I also hit the fish as soon as i get to the tip-up and rarely miss fish.
