Have the cobra. Works fine. Just don't hear much on radio's these days with cell phones. Nobody wants knowledge on public air. I scan and pick up well. Mostly carry mine for a mayday.

I had "hand helds" for a while. One got flipped out of the boat so the fish could listen to our strategy and avoid fishermen. The other had a battery that got old and couldn't be replaced. The price of boat mounted units has dropped dramatically so I got one. The fact it's completely submersible is something going for it. Not many cell phones can claim that.

whatever brand you purchase I would make sure it is a floating one. I have the icom floating one and one time netting a fish it came unhooked from my lifevest and fell in the lake and floated back up like a bobber.

Just a note on the weather thing. Get "myradar? ann "Marine Weather" apps for your phone instead of reliying on the weather on the radio.

I have the 350 and think it's good. I know I have been able to talk with someone loading their boat at McKinley and I was out in front of the filtration plant in 110 FOW.

Any thoughts on the Cobra HH350 for around a $100?

Buy a handheld with the most output power available. The ICOM IC-M73 has 6 watts of output power and is waterproof. It has full scan functions as well.

Good Luck

most are $100 bones and I would make sure it has scan feature and betters ones have dual or triple channel watch which is nice for michigan seeing we hang on 68 and hail from 16.
