maple tree damage

I live in northeast Wisconsin and we have a lot of water in our deer woods and swamps. Last year was very wet starting last summer and never left.

So as usual during the winter and early spring I hit the woods for stand repair, moving, adding and picking up my camera's,etc.

I noticed that a lot of maple trees have been girdled around the base of the tree,I assume it came from mice since we had an explosion of mice.

Every time last season we walked to are stands and back, mice were all over.

Anybody else have the same problem!

I did not take any pictures, the girdling on the trees are at the very low base of the trees and root systems.

Some of the trees are chewed all the way around and some partially.

There is a lot of chewed up bark laying under the bare spots,I wonder if they were eating the sap also.

All the trees were in wet areas and many of the trees were on high spots surrounded by water,I'm afraid many of the trees are going to die.
