Forest County Deer Hunting
As an add on to my comments yesterday. Last year our group (of 5) saw 7 deer. 5 doe, 2 fawn and 1 buck. I also saw a group of 3 wolves running over a ridge line and my son's walking in saw a group of 7 wolves run across an old railroad grade. When driving the fire lanes north of Hiles sometimes we see as many wolf tracks as deer tracks after a fresh snow. Yes, the late season and the Wed. night snow storm affected the 2019 hunt, but the number of wolves in the area just adds to the problem.
I've been hunting north of Hiles for 60 yrs now. In the same area for the last 50 yrs. Usually we have 5-6 hunters in camp. This was one of our worst years. We get to our stands in the dark and leave after 4:30 in the late afternoon. This year my youngest son saw a doe with 2 fawns and 2 wolves ,,, all on Monday morning. My oldest son hunted 7 1/2 days and saw no deer. By far one of our worst years. With the Wed. snow storm we were able to see the deer movement thru the area thru Sat. and most moved at night. Very few moved during daylight.
I agree, been coming to the carter area for 30 plus years and this was by far the worst season. Very little shooting opening weekend and very few hunters to move the deer. I am not sure if I will make it back next year, never went this long without shooting a deer!!
12 hunters out of Carter. 1 miss of a 4 pointer opening day...1 spike passed opening day. No deer seen after Tuesday. Skunked. Worst deer season ever. Im talking 50 years of record keeping. Keep coming up for tradition. That may have ended this year. Yikes
The DNR was out in the Blackwell area opening day with a plane and there were a number of hunters who got tickets for baiting!! Just enough snow to pick out the bait from the air is what the warden told the guy we talked to that got caught!! A little more than $300 is the fine!!
About a dozen hunters in camp and not all dedicated hunters. Deer sightings down from last year. Shots heard opening weekend almost non-existent. Our group broke camp Tuesday morning with the heavy snow predicted. one spike and a nice big bodied 10. Sounds like we did better than most groups in the area with another group we know going 1-15 with a small 3 pointer and two groups of similar sizes skunked...........
Scouted the area last weekend saw a few scrapes and rubs Seen a few deer and couple grouse , alvin/hiles area hoping bucks will still be rutting with the late season this year....
Last week I took a 3 hr. walk in the National Forest in the Laona area where we have shot many deer over the years and it doesn't look good. Only crossed 3 tracks and 1 bed in the fresh snow, no scrapes or rubs. Back in the days when there were deer up there there would be trails like cow paths and scrapes and rubs all over. The most deer sign I seen was a couple piles of wolf crap full of deer hair. Seems to be deer close to cabins and town but back in the big woods the deer are pretty sparse.
Was up for a long weekend with two others and there were not many deer moving. The does that were seen were still grouped with fawns. Hoping its getting ready to heat up! Anyone else experiencing the same? Always seems like a later rut in Northern Forest County!
