I am looking for a nice pair of binoculars....nothing fancy. Primary use will be watching birds in the back yard during winter mostly. Will be used on vacations and travelling so don't want anything heavy, cumbersome to lug around.

Budget: Up to $300.00

The Cabela's / Bass Pro Shops ad shows that they currently have the Vortex Viper 10x42 on sale for $299.  That is a steal.  I have a pair and they are very nice.

Unfortunately i got mine a couple years ago and I'm pretty sure I paid $599, DOH!

Nikon monarch 5 10x42. Right at the top end of your budget. I've had my monarchs for 14 years and they are still great.

10 x 42 is the perfect size. Vortex or other quality brand will do you right. Get in the $180-$250 for the sweet spot in quality/price curve,

One more vote for Vortex. Slight correction though, they are not made in the US but are indeed a Wisconsin company. Top notch service and you deal with real people.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have been looking around and checking reviews and the Vortex brand does have great reviews. I'll continue to search for more options.

Thanks again!

You might look into a binoc with variable power.  Find the subject in the wider field of view with low power and then zoom to higher power to get a closer look.
