I've been to resorts and fishing lodges before that provide guiding service for a fee. In that situation, I have always tipped as the guides were employees of the lodge. In Wisconsin, I see a lot of independent/private guides who have their own business. If anyone has used this type of service before, is it customary to tip on top of their fee, or because they are private and not being paid by an employer, is the tip assumed as part of the fee? Thanks!

Tipping a private guide
I have had the opportunity to fish with different fishing guides in multiple states in both fresh and salt. Most have been excellent a couple have been duds. One dud was typical he was simply a bartender trying to make some extra cash in the AM. After spending few hours with them it was apparent they didn't pre-fish, explore new lakes or fish for recreation. On the other hand the full time pro guides were outstanding. They busted their butts to get us on fish. Once you include the cost of boat (many own two) fuel, insurance and equipment for their clients it typically doesn't add up to a big payday. Now add the aggravation of dealing with a client that holds the spinning rod upside down or is telling them how or where to fish they earn dime of the base fee.
I don't tip the duds but my partner and I typically tip the good guys at 20% to 30%
