They look like baby Muskies or Northern Pike!

I think they are fairly rare in WI. I have only caught one in the 35ish years that I've fished. Mine came from the West Twin River downstream between the Shoto dam and the Conservation Club when I was a kid. I thought it was a hammer handle pike but an old gentleman pointed out the vertical stripe over it's eye and said it was a grass pickerel. Would have never known it had he not been there.

I've heard they were in Phantom Lake, but I've fished there often and seen none.  I went into Racine County and caught some in a lake in Burlington.  Rockland Lake has some Grass Pickerel.  My son caught one and so did I ice fishing two weeks ago.

I caught this pickerel on a jig and waxworm while fishing for gills on a small Waukesha county lake today.  It was about a foot long.  I’m not sure if it is a chain pickerel or a grass pickerel.  Any ideas?
