I am looking for a place ....or places to buy vegetables by the bushel. Tomatoes, beets, rutabagas, onions............ you get the idea. Been to some farmers markets but it seems as though they cater to the yuppie crowd and overcharge.

In St Louis I know you are way far from their there is a place called Soulard Market.  It is the place where all of the farmers bring in their produce to sell to buyers for major stores ... Sometimes you can get some great deals there.  You might look if you are near a big city for such a place.

You might want to try the Amish.

Thanks for the ideas guys.  Been at basses......they seem to like to clip the gullible...ie higher prices than the store.  Any other places???

Lots of vendors sell by the bushel at farmer's markets but usually not until the end of summer when they're inundated with produce.  And it's typically pretty cheap.  We buy tomatoes by the bushel at that time for all of our salsa and spaghetti sauces for the year.
