Vegetable Garden

Who's got one ? what are you growing ? and how's it coming along? Mine consists of sweet corn , cabbage , brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli ,cucumbers, zucchini, peas, tomatoes , peppers , acorn squash, pumpkins, and assorted spices. The cold wet weather hasn't been very conducive to good growth so far for me. But with warmer weather in the forecast things should turn out. I hope those of you growing fair better.

They have good products for all plants not just tomatoes. They are just way overpriced. You can get just as good organic fertilizer for a fraction of what they charge but they have a lot of mixes that have everything you need in one, so you pay for convenience. 

My tomatoe plants are about 4' to 5' high right now, Gary the Groundhog got into them when I first planted and ate some, dug one up and folded one over but I propped it up and it's doing fine now.
The secret to my large tomatoe plants is the Fox Farm trio of nutrients that I use, they are popular with at home cannabis growers and work great on tomatoe plants. 

Deer came through and snipped the tops of all my tomatoes when they were about that tall, they grew back even better. Let it ride!

Any opinions on if these guys are worth trying to salvage after hail? Cucumbers and broccoli are junk, but can start those over, might be a bit late for the eggplants. I do have some extra tomato plants, but not sure if I should pull these and put in the small plants that would be about a month behind. Just dont want to wait to see what happens to find out ​later down the road I should have just pulled them and put something else in

You'd be surprised how fast the tomatoes will grow outside and catch up to ones that were 6 to 10 weeks old when planted.  I have tomatoes pop up in my garden every year and I usually let one or two of them grow.  They don't produce early but by September I'm usually getting tomatoes off them, about 3 weeks after most of my other tomatoes.

Wiskp.   What happened?   We both seeded around the same time and mine are 25-35” tall already.

Plant them. Let Ma Nature do the rest😉

I have some tomatoes that came up late. Is 6to late for them..should I just discard??

Lots of potatoes this year. Some in the back garden (pic in last post), garden by the house and in some grow bags. In the garden by the house theres dill growing and acouple cilantro plants that just came up wild like they do every year. All onions (pictured, right side) started from seed this year and the ones in this garden are looking really good. I just gave them some fertilizer this afternoon so i hope i get some descent bulbs this year.

Bucket garden has a variety of peppers in the buckets. Theyre doing well. 

Finally, all veggies planted and labeled! Got two unknown tomatoes growing in the gardens this year. I put a cage over them and we'll see what I get. Anyone know what the common store bought tomato is? I labeled that as a beefsteak but who knows. It was an experiment to see if a slice of tomato would germinate its seeds and it did, 10 of them from one slice! So one of them is in my garden now and the others i gave away. Garlic scapes were picked yesterday. I just chopped them up and froze them. I use them in lots of things like on top of pizza, stir fry and sauces.  Heres a few pics of my gardens. Nothing huge yet but almost everything is looking nice and healthy.

Can you tell which half was planted with compost and which wasn't? That is enough confirmation to me that planting potatoes with compost is beneficial. 

Junkie, I did Zinnias and marigolds from seed this year as well as a packet that was listed as a "wildflower mix."  It had some Zinnias in it too, and then some tallish, skinny flowers that stayed nice and tall and skinny standing upright until I put them outside, then they fell over!  Why they can survive standing straight up when a fan is blowing on them but not mother nature beats the heck out of me!  I think there's also some daisies and bachelor buttons in the mix?  Not sure though.  Some are perennials and others are annuals in the mix.  I also bought some petunias and pansies for some more color.  I had ZERO survival rate on both of those plants from seed this year!  But the Zinnias and Marigolds look great. Some of the Zinnias are starting to flower, but they'll grow twice as big outside and continue to flower until the first frost kills them! I love Zinnias!  I bought a flower bed for my daughter a few years ago and I just spread seeds in that and let them grow.  Squirrels love to jump off the pine trees and land in there and dig though, so not many end up making it! Stupid squirrels!

FLM - do you prestart your zinnias inside in spring? Do you have any annual flowers you grow that you can direct seed into the ground? I envy all the gardens with flowers in them. I did plant some sunflowers this weekend, but they won't flower until September. 

PS - check those potatoes for potato bugs, mine showed up in full force this weekend. Neem oil and hand picking does the trick. 

I finally have all 4 of my gardens planted and the flowers I place around 2 of them.  Some of the flowers did not look good when I was planting them.  I waited too long on some of the flowers I bought 3ish weeks ago and they were extremely root balled.  They might perk back and if not, it's just flowers! I have over 50 of them planted so the bees will find something they like!  Only flowers I have left to plant now are zinnias and a few perennials that are finally big enough to plant.  Perennials take quite a while to get bigger!
