I pruned all of my fruit trees and raspberries over the weekend. I have 3 apple trees, 1 pear tree, a peach tree (new last year) and probably a dozen or so raspberry bushes, some are June bearing and others are ever bearing but I can't tell the difference.

Dug up and moved a row of black raspberries and planted a few plugs of blackberries.

I have 3 Apple, 1 Plum, 2 Grape vines.  I also work part time for the township. I know where and when to gather more from right of ways. This comes in handy as I am semi-retired and found a new hobby for preserving these fruits. It's called Wine.

I have ever bearing plants and cut all the canes down to about 6". I do it in the  winter when dormant. Been doing this for years and seems to work well.

budman depending on the variety last year's canes is what produces this year's fruit. fall bearing is different than june bearing, cut those down to the ground, leaving only a little bit for the canes to grow from, similar to trimming roses bushes (they are in the same family).  I have both ever bearing and june bearing so I leave the june bearing (which usually don't produce til July though, at least mine don't), and prune the ever bearings close to ground level.

What do u mean by cut back raspberries? Removing all the dead canes? I have a pretty large producing patch in my back yard. Last year I burned the whole thing in early spring not sure if that was the right thing to do or not?

I pruned my apple trees last week and also cut back all my raspberries, I agree that they will be waking up early this year, just look how early the maple sap is running.

When does everyone start trimming their fruit trees, or have they done it already?  I typically start in March, but this year the trees will be waking up a little earlier than usual.

Fall raspberries are just starting. Honeycrisp apple tree I lost most of the apples this year it produced in several wind storms.  Harvested 3 that's it! The mystery apple tree has about 8 apples on it. Not many, but they're really good once they're ready.  They aren't ready until after a frost though.  Very tart until frost, then they're real sweet once the skin turns more yellow.  I have no idea what this apple type is. I think it's the root stock of the original tree that the main branch to it died when I bought the tree. It was supposed to be a dwarf jonathan tree, but instead I get golden delicious looking apples, but I know they're NOT golden delicious.

Good to know, will try this year.  They eat the heck out of our grapes, raspberries, beans and filbert trees.  Someone tell the authorities that H E L L is not fowl language...
