I'm finish up my first fly rod build. Its a temple fork professional series blank in a 9wt. I'm wondering if any of you have experience with this reel. I'm looking for something thats less than $100 bucks, but I also don't want to buy a crap reel.

What do you guys think?

I haven't got it yet. I should have it tomorrow or monday. I still need to finish the rod before I use it Crying I also need the line. The ebayer is really slow at shipping.

It does hold a ton of backing from what I read. I'll let you know what I think.

Well I took the plunge and bought the allen. I don't have many places to look in town so I had to go off of reviews. I hate buying stuff like this without getting to see or feel it but in this case I didn't have much of a choice. I frequent another board and talked to a few people that say its awesome for the money. We'll see, I sure hope so. I'll try to get it out and give it a try and let you guys know.

Thanks for your feedback.

Well, there's a lot to be said for a personal testimonial, ctious clearly knows his fly reels, sounds like an Allen reel is definitely worth a try. I agree that aggressive opening pricing is an effective means of quickly gaining market share. FWIW, I've read some comments about the Cabela's RLS reels totally sucking, glad I'm happy with mine!

Those allen reels loook really sweet, ctious, but personally, I'm kinda wary about buying a reel sight-unseen.

When I was shopping for my first fly-fishing stuff, I took a look at the similarly sweet-looking Cabela's SLA reels (see pic); beautiful design and smooth-running, but when I checked out the drag on multiple reels, it just didn't hold a candle to what I ended up getting, the Cabela's LSR.

While drag may not be much of an issue at lower weights, I sure want a quality drag when fishing pike or steelies with 8-9WT. Just a thought before you plop down a fair chunk 'o cash for something that has the potential to turn out being less than what you might have hoped for.
