Canadian Reports/Discussion
Silver Dollar Area Ontario
So guys how are your trip plans shaping up for lakes on the 599 corridor this year, Ignace and north to Pickle? I am down to two longer trips and forgoing my shorter trips. We will see how the world crumbles in the coming months, and I am sure fuel will be insane.
Still planning Flatrock in June, and Sturgeon and points north in August.
Been going to the Silver Dollar area for a few years now. Mainly fish Sturgeon but have also fished Flying Loon with great success when Sturgeon was too rough. We fully support Steve at Moose Bait. We always pick up the jigs or blade baits that are working when we're there in addition to our minnows and gas for the boat. We stop at Silver Dollar for Labatt's. I grabbed a bottle of Wiser's and Sortilege (if you've never had this, you gotta try it) to bring home. Love the area and convenience of having local shops nearby the place we stay. It's worth the extra few bucks.
Great post Muzzdog!!
We've been comin up to Silver Dollar area for 35+ years and couldn't agree more!!
The friends we have made there are truly some of the best I know.
Please support them in the coming years and help them build back the dreams they help make for all of us.
Can't wait for Spring!!!
My wife, my brother-in-law and I fished the Silver Dollar area lakes Sept. 18-24. Like the other reports here, the fishing was excellent. I don't know whether the great fishing was related to the lack of fishing pressure for two years, or the warm weather and water temps in 2021,or maybe the fish gods just wanted to reward some of us after the the past years struggles.
We had so much fun, my wife and I even booked a return trip the first week of October, as the weather forecast was for continued warm weather. Unfortunately a family health issue cancelled our return trip.
We have gone several years in September, but I am more into bird hunting than fishing. My brother in law didn't hunt so I spent more effort fishing this year. Usually our fishing is only fair in September and it often snows. This year we caught fish wherever we went.
We stopped at the Silver Dollar a few times and talked with the new owner. He was very nice. He said it was really rough the last two years. Investing in a new business and then having most of your customers unable to get to it. He said loggers and construction workers were basically his only customers.
I was happy to see that he was building a deck on the front of his the store. I thanked him for investing in his business and told him how much that area has meant to our family.
Next year when we all go back up there, please stop in the Silver Dollar and Moose Creek Bait. Buy a shad rap you don't need. Buy a nice fleece or flannel for the wife and some t-shirts for the grand kids too. Buy a bottle of whiskey and give it as a gift. Maybe top off your gas tank before heading home, rather than estimating exactly how many gallons you need to get back across the border.
When we couldn't go, we all realized how much this area means to us. Support the businesses that support out fun.
We re-booked for two weeks in Sept. 2022.
My group went up on August 14th for fishing and bear hunting. The border crossing went smoothly. We had our paperwork linked to the Canadian site and it was painless. Bear hunting was tough due to the very hot conditions, temps getting into the 90s. But it was a fun experience. Fishing was amazing! We caught plenty of walleyes. I would say that the walleye fishing was as good, if not better than June, when we usually go.
We just got back from spending eight days by our cabin. The fishing this year up there is absolutely amazing it’s been along time since I seen it this good. Excellent grouse hunting as well by the way. The walleyes are so thick I am even catching them on my downrigger’s when I have them set at 60 feet down.
