Spark plug wires

Noticed a small tear in one of my spark plug boots, upon further inspection it is tore down to the metal. The motor is 2003 optimax 225hp. My question is could I go to an automotive store and try to "cross reference" the marine wire with an equivalent automotive one? I only ask because it will be quicker than ordering one or having to wait on a marine center to get one if they don't already have. I have done this with the trim/tilt relays that is another reason why I'm asking

Sorry Scrub, thought when you said down to bare wire that you were replacing entire unit. My bad

Didn't replace the wire as the wire wasn't the issue. The boot ONLY was replaced. I would've gotten oem merc wires if the problem was in the wires

FYI: Not all plug cables have the same resistance. Your engine may not get enough spark with the wrong cables. This is important also because one plug may be hotter/cooler than others if mixed and matched.

If there was a part # I didn't notice it. The guy behind the counter went in back and brought out a large tackle tray that was filled with many types of boots and we just matched the torn one best we could and that was that. It went WAY better than I could've ever imagined

Good stuff Scrub...

The price of OEM stuff is enough to give a guy heartburn. Sometimes it is the only way to go, and sometimes you can get creative like you did, and get her going for a few nickels...

Cost was $2.63. Beats the heck out of $95ish for complete set of oem mercury wires

Follow up....since only the boot was tore I was able to take the wire in to napa, cut the old boot off with a razor blade(carefully) and they found a boot that was 99% identical. Test run this pm but I expect everything to run just fine
