So I recently bought a pontoon with a 75 hp mercury motor. The boats only 18 ft and rated to a 50 so I'm thinking a motor upgrade is in the future. How does a guy figure out the year of the motor. I've done some looking going off the serial number and can't get anywhere. The guy "Thought" is was a 73. The serial number is 0a994723. Any help would be really appreciated. I can't wait to pan fish the backwaters off this thing

I came up with an 86 and agree with not running oversized motor

did a little research using the serial number you supplied, 0a994723.  You drop off the 0 (Merc adds them so all #s contain 8 digits I read), and use remaining a994723.  Search revealed your motor is a 1986, model #1075726, 75hp.

There is no way I'd run any water craft overpowered beyond the USCG rating plate maximum.  Beyond the possible law enforceable reasons, no insurance company will honor a policy should  something happen.  But that's just my opinion...

Mercury Mariner serial numbers do not contain year as far as I can tell. It is usually Listed on plate near serial number. Best bet is to look up older 75hp mercy motor serial numbers and find out where your # lies. Your number is just under a million so it should be easy to find? LOL. I tried but don’t have time this morn to investigate further.
