As I was launching my boat this past weekend I put my motor in reverse to back off the trailer and I noticed that the motor was knocking or making a funny noise. I put it neutral, it stopped, and in forward it ran like a champ. I had no issues starting the motor all weekend and it ran great other wise. Anyone have any ideas? something I should be really concerned about?

Change the oil in your lower unit to see if you have any tiny metal flakes. If you do, it is time to take into a marina unless your comfortable pulling the lower unit on your own.

If you don't, a gear problem is not as likely. Also, if it is knocking in reverse you will likely screw up your clutch dog.

I wouldn't use reverse until you get a better handle on it.

Also, you may want to check your shift linkage, it may be loose.
