I cleaned the carb and had a gas leak after. I think it is the bowl gasket which is hard to align. Can you use silicone or gasket stuff to hold something like that in place or does it come loose and foul the carb?
9.9 merc carb problem
So I take it that the float bowl on this engine doesn’t have a groove for o-ring? I guess they all don’t.
I ended up using a little vaseline. I learned that silicone and sealants are a no no.
Good tip Westfield
Put a little bit of grease on the gasket that will help it stay in place as long as your components are dry. I have never rebuilt a carburetor I just use this trick on other gasket applications.
I am assuming you completely removed the carburetor, and rebuilt it on your bench?
I just rebuilt the carb on my 15 horse Johnson, the bowl gasket was four screws, really wasn’t much trouble.
What are you up against, have any pictures?
I bought the kit - it had a bowl gasket. It is hard to get the bowl gasket lined up without some stickem.
You can buy a rebuild kit for somewhere around $20, that is the best way to go - it includes the bowl gasket.
