Does anyone know when the drawing is?

freeguideservice - totally agree!! Look at how quick the Kentucky elk population grew, they have thousands of elk now!  We have a few hundred and a good portion of them are transplants.

I would love to support it but there should be thousands of elk in the state by now. do to the wolf population that will never happen. This is a simple money grab by the DNR so 5 lucky hunters can get drawn and probably never see a elk. fantastic .

The wolfs must go

I'm thinking the number of applicants won't be near as high as the deer licenses since its only open to residents.  Not that it matters but I know some who aren't applying who do deer hunt, so not every deer hunter is going to care about this.  Especially if you live way in the south and don't want to spend the funds to drive up there.  Could be wrong though, just a guess.

Not a point system. If it was anyone who doesn’t apply the first year would never get a tag. It’s a lifetime tag so once you draw you are no longer eligible for future elk tags.

Will it be a point system or just luck every year?

At first I figured at least everyone who deer hunts, around 500,000 or so, would be applying.  But now I'd be surprised if more than 100,000 people applied after talking with people and looking at other states like Kentucky.  I believe they have around 50,000 residents apply per year and they give out around 1,000 tags so you have much better odds than here.

Even with the slim odds, I still applied.  I'll probably buy a raffle ticket too, if anything to support the RMEF and hopefully get more elk here so someday I might have a better chance at drawing.

I'm guessing over, it could be close to the deer gun season licence totals which is over 550,000 licences. No matter what it's just another cash cow for the DNR for years to come. I figure a safe estimate would be around 400,000 hunters will apply the first year, which means the DNR will make $800,000 per elk.

Most of the elk draw revenues will go back into the elk program the same way trout stamps fund trout stocking and habitat work, salmon stamps fund salmon stocking, pheasant stamps fund pheasant stocking and habitat work, turkey stamps fund the turkey program, fishing license revenue funds lake surveys and stocking, deer license revenue funds the deer program, snowmobile registrations and trail passes fund trail maintenance, waterfow stamps fund waterfowl habitat work, and yes, the same way sturgeon licenses fund the sturgeon program.

I'll try , not like I never spent ten bucks foolishly before !!

It would be nice if the money was earmarked for elk the same way they do with Sturgeon money .
