Wisconsin Bear Hunting
Clark co Chris Should of had one opening night, couldn't have asked for a better chance. The guy baiting for me puts the camera on video when someone is sitting and have a great video of a nice one. Don't know how to post it or would share. hope I get another video of him, walked away so not to shaken up. Otherwise the baits are about like yours. Very little activity. Have sat a bunch, sat tonight, beautiful night but no action. Just hope like you that things pick up. Last time I had a tag for C sat 14 times before I saw anything and then saw 3 in 2 sits so still hope things change
Still nothing happening here. Bait was last hit Wednesday night (ten days ago). Had a bear at the bait site twice since then, but neither even tipped the stump.
Talked to a local outfitter last weekend. They had seven bear in the first week (and may have had two more if not for some mistakes made by his hunters). He made it sound as though this was slightly above average, but he was happily surprised with their success rate given the super large amount of mast in our area. He also said one bear they got, he has no idea why it visited the bait site, as when they dressed it, it's stomach was packed full of chokecherries! Still seem to be a large amount of chokecherries hanging around by me. No shortage of corn, acorns and mushrooms either. Never remember seeing this many mushrooms, either in the woods or in my yard! Just hoping the natural food dries up soon, and the bait becomes active again! Four years ago (my last tag), my bait stopped Labor Day weekend and sat untouched for three full weeks. After a few night time hits. I was lucky enough to get a bear on Oct. 3rd. He was the first bear to make a daylight visit to the bait in 28 days!! Hope persists! :)
Griff n, where you been?? You were reporting all the time before season, but nothing since the opener. Any success?
Never on the bait. 100yds from the bait, yes a few times. Sometimes miles from the bait!
I wish there was some merit to scaring all the game theories. If it was true. I wouldnt be trying to avoid growly and GT every day. Just isnt the case though. Both hit 2 baits each last night. About 1 mile from each other.
I thought it was going to be a great night with calm weather. A great morning as well. With every bait hit the day before. Many by multiple bears. I was completely wrong!! Including the 75 pounder. I had 5 baits hit by 3 bear.
Which is odd as mast crops drying up. Some chokes left. Mushrooms everywhere. Acorns yes, but most are red oak around here. They pretty much dont get eaten. Should be pounding the baits. Im sure this weather is not helping though.
Got 5 guys on stand right now. With the rain, and wind it dont look to promising.
Really I should say 2 for 8 as one guy only hunted one night and another never did hunt.
Steve, I will say a word. People that think bears relate the dogs and the bait together are not using their head. The bear is usually a fair distance from the bait when they get jumped. I've never had them jump one on the bait. Have you? I've had a hunter sitting on the bait miss the bear with gun and the same bear is back on the bait a couple hours later. Earliest ever was 15 minutes. If they bust the hunter, then its a different story. Bears do not think like people. Now for this year what I have noticed on baits around here. Food in the woods was less than most years. Berry crops were light and what was there were unusually small. Chokes were around but pretty well dried up by season opener. Bears were travelling further foraging. Still around 45% bait hits every day. However different baits each day and different bears. Seeing more than usual bears show up that I hadn't seen before all year. But still the home range bear too. Due to everything being behind this year very few acorns at the start. Now about 4 days ago they started falling here. Yesterday and today much heavier. Only one bear on a bait in the last 2 nights. Its going to get tougher now for sure. Zone C of course. So far 2 for 9, nothing big. Although they are around.
Hunter on stand tonight sent me a pic of a bear at the bait. Thankfully he was not one of the 99% to blast the first thing coming in. The 75 pounder sitting inside the stump. Was just too cute to shoot!! Funny thing about this. He was under a mile from where we harvested the bear yesterday with dogs!! How is this possible?? Now more funny is the next 2 pics. The bear we harvested yesterday at the bait. The next pic is a bear at that very same bait this morning!!! Im not going to say a word. Just let you think on it all!!
Doortay, Picture got cropped for some reason. That was Grilled/ smoked chicken breasts and legs. Smoked acorn squash, and sweet corn. Both locally grown! Fried zucchini from same farmer. Potato salad, macaroni salad, and baked beans. Nobody leaves hungry!
Steve White. What's for dinner looks good but can't tell what it is
Finally broke the curse this morning. 260lb dressed boar with 2 white patches. Never seen this one on any camera before. Don't know where he came from. I was way off on the game cam pic. Thought it was 175 if lucky! Almost didn't even put down. Hunter said he had to eat though. Guess he will be eating good for awhile! The 150 yd drag would have been awesome normally. Having stepped on one of the dogs deer horns last night. For the second time this week! I have a large puncture wound in the bottom of my foot. Thanks to adrenaline, and tight boots it was manageable.
No sitters out tonight, and nobody for the morning. We get a much needed bit of rest. Could hunt for the wife's bear. I know she would rather sleep in though! Besides can hardy walk now, dam antlers!
