I shot at a mature 10 pointer last night and completely missed because of a stupid forced shot. (no lecture needed, i beat myself up enough). My question is will this mature deer be back. I have had cameras out since September, but only have caught him on film for about 1.5 weeks. I saw him come out last night at 5:00 pm. So, do deer that are spooked by a missed shot return to that location, and if so, how soon?

I am hunting the edge of a hardwoods and CRP field.

your thoughts?

thread is not about broadheads or poor/good shots. it is about opinions/stories of missed shots/spooked deer that have been shot out of the same location at a later date.

Yet people all the time credit the Rage etc for recovering poor hit deer... Deer hit to far back bad shot angle etc and that's OK?

Tree I did not see in the dim light, the arrow ricoched around and landed30 ft away in a tree with the nock light facing away from me I did not find it till later!Live and learn!!Grandad

granddad- So you're blaming poor shot placement on the broad head you used? You said yourself you heard the dreaded crack of hitting pure bone. Rage broad heads, or any broad heads for that matter can't help marginal or bad shots lay deer down, regardless of their cutting diameter/ability. No matter what broad head, fixed blade or otherwise used, it wouldn't have changed the outcome of a shot to the shoulder blade, even if you have a crossbow that shoots 300+ fps.

I hit a big buck on Monday night, hit a bit low and a little back. Good blood for 50 yards then nothing. Wee, today, Saturday night, he was back about 50 yards north of where I hit him, so yeah, he will settle down and be back. Big bucks are usually in an area for a reason they just change their schedule a bit like moving later

The energy needed to open an expandable leaves little punch through power once contact is made.

Its easier to punch a fixed head through a shoulder than it is an expandable like rage. Why? Smaller cutting diameter = less force.

I hit a nice 6pt last nite,18 yd shot with 350 speed cross bow.Heard the dreaded. Loud crack after I shot!Saw my luminous bouncing away in the dim lite!I thought the RAGE would make up for a shoulder hit guess I was wrong? No blood and no bolt in 200 Yds.Went back this morning still NO Blood!I think I'll go back to fixed blades.Bad hit is still my fault but no confidence in RAGE! Grandad

i have stayed out of there since I spooked him - going back in there tonight if the wind is right, hopefully he makes another appearance.

goof point Flyguy on how many times they get spooked in the woods by non-human activities.
