Rikj,

appreciate your comments, but what I stated below is correct.  I’m well connected throughout the area.  We run cameras on the logging roads all year and you should see the activity after dark!  Hunting miles west of Carter is better and deer don’t yard in the torpee from the area you hunt.  We should take these conversations to the forest county hunting thread.  ????

yamatroller, do the natives have to register their deer? With the recent clear cutting down Diamond Roof Road, I can imagine that they can shoot a lot of deer and really hurt that area with deer population!

S.P. I guess  I forgot about bad winters as being a huge factor in the deer population, a bad winter will wipe out 50% of the deer population up there. Yes the Natives are very hard on the population also, according  to a very reliable source each person can get 10 permits. This guy knows 6 from the tribe that fill all their permits but the meat doesn't go to waste as it is shared thru out the tribe and elders.

Yamatroller, I will tell you the 2 strongest factors for Southern Forest counties deer issues....WEATHER and the southern Forest County residents that shoot yarded deer in the Torpee Swamp for a lack of better things to do.  Been going on for many years since the CASINO was built.  Brought many new people to the area.  Its a handful of people according to the local chatter.  Many shots during summer nights as well from UTV riders on the logging roads.

We are north of Townsend a bit in Forest County and up here there are 2 different stories of the deer population. In the National Forest between the wolves, the mature forest and Native Americans, the deer population is very low.  But get close to town where it's all private land and some farms there are too many deer and that's why doe permits are given out up here. It's nothing  to take a  ride in some areas and see 75 deer some nights  in the  fields. Everybody complaining about doe permits should listen in to the CDAC meetings and hear from the people with agricultural and timber interests, then you would know why antlerless permits are given out.

This area needs to go back to no doe tags. I'm at the cottage 90% of the time. Last year seemed so promising for a deer recovery, yet this whole year, the numbers have been down. Proven with the 5 cameras that I have out. I also watch a big local farm and rarely have spotted more than 1 deer in the field at any given time.

What do you guys mean no doe hunting? 360ish does killed in Forest county. Over 500 in Vilas. Am I missing something?

My dad shot a nice 8 yesterday evening with the muzzleloader west of Townsend.  He wasn't sure about the shot, lots of smoke obviously, so he waited until this morning.  Buck only went 75 yards.

I'm hoping to sit with the bow this Saturday, wishing more snow was still on the ground.

Our cabin is in forest county and the doe population is slowly increasing for sure. Hope for several more years of no doe hunting. I do not hunt there but I haven't seen a single buck up there in years.

Two of us hunted only the Opener outside Wabeno. We saw 4 does and three fawns, but one doe and fawn were probably same two. The snow made for easy deer identification and it was encouraging to see a few deer in the 20 hours we were in woods.  Shooting was sparse as it always is but I am so happy NO does can be harvested during bow or gun season. I think Forest County is still in recovery mode from the does hunt ten years ago or so. I know working til 2:00am and then driving four hours and just getting in woods at daybreak is a lousy way to hunt Opening morning. My brother saw bits and pieces of what he thought was a buck at 7:00am Saturday morning that had walked right across the woods in front of me. I never saw it  because I was “resting my eyes”! Lessons continue to be learned…….

Sure was quiet for the time I spent in Lakewood.  Saw a few deer, but the majority were in my backyard.  LOL.  How did everyone's season go?  Sightings, shots heard, hunting pressure?  Happy Holidays....

Looking forward to getting back in the woods this weekend, but this past gun season ranks up there with one of the worst. I'm sure that all of the recent timber cutting has drawn the deer to their area's for browsing, but convenience and tree stands does not make it worthy for me to move around. My 1 acre food plot has not given me a picture of a deer since 11/21.

Looking for a used Marlin 30/30 with a scope or not for my young son who is hunting next year.  He loves my WIN model 94 30/30 but I wont let him use it for safety concerns.  Thanks...I posted here since I post to this thread mostly.  Thanks -WW
